SEVERAL
FREIGHT CONDUCTORS
Huntington, July 10. Notice has teen given a number of Erie freight conductors who reside in Huntington, by Trainmaster Herman Klein, that in the near future they will be ordered to Cleveland, (.)., to take an examination for entrance Into passenger service. The list of conductors whose promotions are slated, although not officially announced as yet, is known to Include John Stanley, James Mines, William Kary, J. J. Meavey, lavil Terflinger, Abe IUiCamp and Ward Finny. The promotion of the above named conductors will be awarded them throngh their long service record with the Krie railroad and by right of their senlorty over other freight conductors. All of those sloted for promotion have heen employed In the road service of the Erie since the Chicago and Erie division was built or came here to accept employment shortly after its competion and the inauguration of traffic. Several of the conductors who will soon enter the passenger service through their efficient services have
within the last few years served in extra official capacities on the local
division. During the winter of 1911'12 when traffic became congested because of the extreme cold weather and snow storms, Conductors Hines and Heavey were appointed special trainmasters and stationed at North Judson. This ws done is order that trains could be gotten over the road in better time by dividing the regular division into halves during the bad weather. Conductor Heavey about five years ago also served as yard master at Bergen Junction, N. J., but later returned to road service on the Chicago and Erie division. General offices of the Erie passenger department are located at Cleveland and for that reson the local conductors will go there to tke the examination. Following their appointment into the passenger service, the local conductors will continue partially in the freight department, their services in the passenger being only extra until by right of seniority they are given regular passenger runs.

CARNIVAL IS VERY MEDIOCRE
Althougrh fair weither has reigned throughout the first weeks session of the carnival which is located on Hohman street, opposite the public library, Hammond people have failed to approach or speculate as to its merits. Manager Hart, fails to understas-i the cause and has decided to continue his attractions for another week. Mr. Hart has succeeded in securing an orchestra and many additional attractions. Amongst the new features are: Anderson's Dog, Pony and Monkey Show, the High Diver etc. In the latter performance a young miss of 13 years dives 98 feet into a net. Some of the shows there at present are pretty punk and not at all inviting and this is the best that can be said for them.
Where They Play Ball!
Because of the lack of patronage at their games, the Hammond baseball team has disbanded for the rest of the
season and fans will not have an op
portunity of witnessing any more local
games this season at least. The season was a poor one for the Hammond aggregation, the gate receipts at some of the games not being large enough to even cover expenses, part of the time the players having to play for nothing. Harry Moll, the well known third baseman on the local team is the only member of the squad who Is playing active bal. At present Moll is playing sensational ball with Duluth and is making such rapid strides, the associa
tion scouts are hot on Harry's trail. Wagoner. Rhode and -Arter have been playing Sunday games with Crown Point while the balance of the team have quit for the season.
More Sneak Thieves. Sneak thieves broke into the Hammond Pattern Works sometime last night, by forcing a rear window of the plant but upon investigating this morning, nothing was found disturbed or missing. What the thieves were looking for is a mystery to the police. It was also reported that the residence at 134 Towle street was broken into by a tramp, but no articles of value was stolen.
Building Permits. The First Baptrst chuprch took out a building permit at the city hall yesterday afternoon for the erection of a new $30,000 church to be located on their property at 207-213 Sibley street. The church will be 75x106x50 and will be built of veneer brick. Ground will be broken for the foundation next .week. J. A. Battie made anrjlipatinn fnp th.

Carlson Wins Shoot. A dark horse sprung up at the monthly practice shoot of the Hammond police department yesterday afternoon and today Officer Carlson is the proud possessor of a shining gold
medal which he wears on his manly chest. He scored a total of 88 points out of the possible hundred, two points in the lead of Officer Law who captured
the medal at the June shoot. The following scores were made: Galvin i Schoodt , 39 Lute 46 Einsele 43 , Murphy , 26 Kunz so Lain me ....30 Carlson ss
