The prize fighter's career is a short a pretty well-known flg-hter, who Is his feet. And he's losing- his punch
but a gay one. Like Byron, he. often awakes to find himself famous and for the next several years lools around In the lap of luxury. From comparatively starvation he often rises to the greatest affluence. Often one fight makes his fortune. A thin, ill-fed youngster shows up at the training stable of a fight trainer and wants a match. He earnestly informs the promoter that he can lick anything his weight If he only has the chance.- The promoter likes the kid's looks and starts In to train him propertly and finds a few preliminary matches. The kid begins to clean up everything he meets and is talked about in the papers. He acquires a following. After putting the cleaner on
starting to hit the slide, the young un
known is brought to the attention of promoters around the country, who begin to take him seriously. He cleans up a few faster men and is considered a serious contender for the belt In His
class. At last he wins the championship and plenty of change. In fact a little too much change. Because, when once possessed of the wherewithal, he begins to enjoy himself. He feels that he deserves a little fun because he has worked hard to
win success In his chosen field of endeavor and now let Joy be unconflned. He cultivates a keen taste for the shallow joys especially booze and begins to find that he's not as fast as he used to be. In one respect he is a lot

youngsters and has-beens the knocked-

BATTERED CUBS TO MEET GIANTS Injuries Will Keep Zim and Bridwell Out of Battle at Gotham Today.
WHITE SOX READY FOR jASTERN FOE Manager Callahan and Players Return for Long Series at Home.
New York, July 8. In anything but good shape for the impending series against the Giants, Chicago's Cubs arrived here on time last night after a pleasant Journey from Chicago. The Infield probably wil be shot all to pleces'when It faces McGraw's men in the first game of the series today at the Polo grounds. Three regular players may be absent when the umpire gives the signal to
start. It is almost certain two win do on the bench. They are Zimmerman and Bridwel. who are the cripples of the team. The third man who may be out is Manager Evers. The Trojan is not injured, but it is expected he will draw a suspension for his clash with Umpire Eason after the latter forfeited the game to the St. Louis Cardinals In Chicago on Sunday. WANTS TO MEET CHAMPION Philadelphia, July 8. Jack McGuigan, local boxing promoter, yesterday wired an offer of 5,000 to Willie Ritchie, light weight champion, to box Jack Britton of Chicago a six-round no-declston bout at a baseball park here on Labor Day. It Is not likely that Ritchie will accept, as he expects to be matched with either Leach Cross or Freddie Welsh in California on that date.
Manager Callahan and his White Sox returned from Cleveland yesterday, prepared to do battle with four eastern teams In the long series which starts at Comiskey park tomorrow. Frank Chance's Yankees "Will open the Invasion here, playing three games. Philadelphia, Boston,, and Washington follow In the order named, after which Cal and hla cohorts will Jump east for the second trip of the year.
Cal gave his men a day off yester
day, but today a team will be sentto Princeton, II1. to show the fans there how it Is done In the major leagues. Most of the regulars will make the trip. Pitcher "Buck" O'Brien, from whom nothing has been heard since his release was purchased from Boston a week ago, finally came to bat with a telegram announcing he would reach Chicago today. "Buck" ' Informed Comiskey he was ready for slab duty at a moment's notice, so It is a safe bet that he will appear against the easterners, probably In the New York series.
union's senior title games were conducted in Chicago on Saturday. 'It Is hard to imagine worse conditions for anything billed as an international meet," he said. "Thja athletes were forced to dress In old tents, the track was in a terrible state, and the Jumping pits were soft. For the last five years the A. A.
TJ. championships have been on poor
tracks. Chicago capped the climax, however."
