Happenings of a Day in Lake County's Lively Capital
SHUCKS From the Diary of Si. Lence
Th" weather bureau hit It rlprht ag'ln yestiddy. Predicted thunder showers, an" it remained ez dry as usual. Miss Fit 'sex clothes don't make th' . woman, an we'd be sorry t' think they did. "Don't take your business with you on your vacation." Record Herald. j Sum fellers wouldn't overload their ' grips If they did. One thing was broupht out clear and distinct In the athletic line yesterday, and that Is that the size of the size of the town doesn't cut much figure in the quality of a baseball team or its chances of winning or losing:. Predictions and prophesies of the fans , baseball dopesters were also set at ' nsnght in the game between Crown Point and Griffith yesterday at Erie ' park, the boys from the town of sand and many railroads maklnar the Crown Point aKrefcation look like a lot of corner lot ragball players, before the (tame ended in an awful score of 8 to 2 in favor of the visitors. Crown Point has days when it can play ball, but the day was off fishing or out on a picnic yesterday and refused to make any appearance at the ball park where it was badly needed. It might have
been there possibly before the Rama telling how it was Roinar to do it, of perhaps it sauntered in after the carnage to tell how it should have been done, but during the contest nary a vistage was caught of it by the anxious spectators. Crown Point was off in Its pitching staff, "Wild Bill" Case failing to make an appearance, but that fact does not condone for things that happened that shouldn't have happened in other- departments of the playing staff. Tommy Taylor essayed to twirl for the locals in the absence of Case, but he proved too much of an expert and adept in hitting the bats of the opponents, and aided by a lot of wooiy fielding, the game was soon lost for Crown Point. Dusty Arter then lobbed a few over in an efTort to knook the varnish off the opposing team's war clubs and succeed
ed so well thru the Griffith lads thought he was trying to spoil their perfectly good, shiny bats " and were quite miffed over it. What more can or need be said. Griffith. 8; Crown Point, 2. Oh, for you good excuse. The need of rain Is assuming serious proportions in Lake county and if relief is not afforded within the next week there are several crop in this vicinity that will he a total failure. Potatoes and all of the small garden truck have bet n preatly damaged to date by the present drought and corn and oata are also beginning to show the effects of the hot, dry winds and long continued dry spell. The city council will meet for their resrular monthly session, and as there are several Important matters connected with the city's future welfare, such as the extension of water jnains, the Bezor ditch proposition. Say Work Has Begun. Porter people are anxiously awaiting the announcement that the deal for the Pere Marquette wards has been closed and that active work will be begun. . Interest in the matter has been aroused by the fact that a gang of surveyors has been at work on the proposed site, probably making a map of what will be the yards. The location of these yards will be a big-thing for both Chesterton and Porter. The removal of a hundred or more families to this section would mean a whole lot and help us get out of the rut and Into the pace that our neighbors to he west are enjoying. We understand that the matter is at presententlrely up to the railroad company, and from present Indications they may call any day for a fulfillment of the promises made them. Chesterton Tribune. An Anodyne. "An anodyne," patiently explained a well-known physician to a woman patient, "is a delusion. Any medicine that soothes pain has this drawback it relieves the attack, but the next attack comes onmuch sooner. Under
stand, it'll cure your headache, but you're bound to hare another headache in a day or two." The woman pondered a bit. "I know just -what yon mean, doctor," she said. 'Tve noticed it about Henry, my husband, you know. A doctor prescribed whisky for his cough. My husband says it cured his cough quicker than anything else ever did, hut I notice that he gets a new cough almost every week, now." Louisville Times.
