MISS BILLIE BURKE'S LATEST PET
Some famous person once said that the more he saw of men the better he liked dogs. Miss Billie Burke. Charles Frohman's charming young tar, doesn't go quite as far as that but she does like dogs. She used to carry about with her on tour two little Pomeranians. She got them Id Pittsburgh, and they were snow white Just after they had had a bath. Her latest pet 1 a toy terrier, with a pedigree considerably longer than she Is herself, that Miss Burke calls Lily Parradell after the name of the character she herself played in "The 'Mind the Paint' Girl" that is to say, that is the name the little dog was christened. Miss Burke usually calls her -Baby." She was a present to the actress from W. APlnkerton, the famoua detective. Mr. Pinkerton on making the presentation said that he thought any one as charming as Miss Burke ought to hare a protector.

Tha bridal music was rendered by Mrs. Wagner, soloist, and Mrs. Gilbert Clippingrer, a sister of the bride. Tho bride wore a beautiful white lingerie gown. The wedding breakfast was served after the ceremony. The tables were prettily appointed :n white and yellow. In the ceremony room there was & profusion of marguirites and palms and ferns. Mr. and Mrs. Sohl left Indianapolis last evening for a boat trip and are expected to arrive in Hammond Saturday. They will be at home in Hammond after September 15th. Mrs. Sohl formerly lived in Hammond and was very prominent in the younger social set. She was a member of the Inter Se Club. She is a graduate of the Hammond high school and also or Derauw university of Greencastle, Ind. She is the eldest daughter of Judge and Mrs. Ibach. Mr. Sohl Is the only son of Mrs. Cynthia W. Sohl of Mason street. He Is one of Hammond's well known young business men. After his high school course he attended Wabash college at Crawfordsville, Ind. He Is a member of the I'hl Delta Theta fraternity. Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Tree and children, Euirene and Leo of Walter street left Sunday evening for a visit with relatives and friends in the east. They will first visit in Ohio after which they will go to Pittsburgh and later to Altoona, West Virginia. They expect to be absent from Hamond about two months. Miss Ella Sharrer of relpl, Ind., is the guest of Dr. and Mrs. H. E. Sherrer at their home in South Hohman street. Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Burge of Merrlllville are spending the day with Mr. and Mrs. Ralph M. Pierce at their home. 584 Michigan avenue. Mrs. Pierce will return home with them and spend the remainder of the week. Winters, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stephen Winters of Baring avenue, to Dr. F. U Townsley took place at the Winters' home last evening in the presence of a large gathering of friends of the young people. The wedding was a very pretty affair, and after a reception and buffet supper the bride and bridegroom left for Chicago to remain until this morning, at which time they left on a lake trip. The ceremony was performed Di j.ev. n. ii. Crowder of the Methodist church. Miss Clara Strouse of Hammond served a maid of honor, while the best man was Dr. Raleigh Hale. The bride came into the parlor on the arm of her father, who gave her away. She was dressed in a becoming- gown of white satin and carried a shower bouquet of white roses. The bridesmaid was dressed in pink. As they approached the window in which the ceremony was performed Mrs. F. L. Evans played the wedding march from LohenSrin. After the wedding the company, about seventy-five, assembled in the dining room a very tasty supper was served. The table was decorated with a centerpiece of roses, while roses lay Strewn about on the Moth- Fern, fni-m. ed a graceful decoration about the rooms. The bride and groom received many handsome presents. On their return from their honeymoon they will make their home with Mrs. Townsley's people. Miss Mary Helen Davis of Magoun avenue returned home Sunday night from Cincinnati, whom h visits rela tives for some time. Miss Davis has neen in poor health ever since a vac
cination, and while sHe is feelins pretty well now, she is still frail. The Epworth League will hold a business and social meeting tonight at the church. Th. league cabinet has charge of the entertainment. Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Jones and children are visiting in Pittsburg. They left Saturday evening. Mr. Jones will stay about a month. The, social which was to have been held July 9 on the E. W. Wickey lawn has been called t(T Indefinitely. The affair was to have been under the auspices of the Ladles' Social Union of the Methodist church. Mrs. E. Snyder of One Hundred and Forty-fourth street has been entertaining two nieces rom down in Illinois. Her guests will leave tomorrow. Mrs. Carl Janssen is entertaining a few friends this afternoon in celebration of her twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Ralph Canine and Miss Margaret Canine re having a delightful time In the country, they having left as soon as vacation began to visit their mothers and fathers' people down state. Mrs. E. N. Canine has decided to discontinue her Monday afternoon at homes for July and August on account of the hot weather and of the fact that she will be at home only a part of those months. She expects to visit her's and her husband's people during the summer. Miss Florence Slocomb', one of the teachers of the McKinley school, who has been out. of town since the vacation began, came to East Chicago yesterday to attend the Winters-Townsley nuptials. .Go to Snyder's for picture framing. John Wickey, who has been very 111 for about three weeks with tonsilitis, showed slight Improvement today. On Sunday a trained nurse was procured to care for him. INDIANA KA&BQTL Mrs. William Hughes, who Is at a hospital in Chicago, where she underwent a serious operation last Friday, Is reported considerably improved today. The Baptist Aid society will hold the monthly business meeting Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the church. Misses Elsie and Florence Fox of 3423 Grapevine street, who left Sunday for a holiday, are now in Cleveland, where they are visiting relatives. They will also go to Parkersburg and Follansbee, W. Va before returning to their home. Mrs. A. Bedford will entertain at an old-fashioned dance Thursday eveninff at her home in Elm street. The Day Nursery association is planning on a series of card parties next fall for the benefit of the nursery. The will be held monthly. Mrs. George Witt is expecting her sister, Mrs. Smith, and niece, Miss Helen Smith, to make her a visit. The guests are of Strawberry Point. Ia., and will arrive today. There was another case of heat prostration at the Inland mill yesterday. This was that of a laborer In the blast furnace yards and his name could nt be learned. It Is a strange circumstance that all of the heat prostrations thus far have been of men working In the open, rather than those who are subjected to the intense heat of the furnaces and boilers, etc. The Inference seems to be that the sun is deadlier than the heat produced by artificial means. The first of the evangelical meetings to be held at the Christian church this week under the direction of C. J. Sharp of the ammond Christian church will take place tonight. 4 .'''- f, i 8 t Rev. Charles Savidge. In spite of the hot weather, Rev. Charles Savidge of Omaha. Neb., is not taking a vacation. He keeps busy all the while and hia mission in life ia to make matches. He carries on a sort of free matrimonial bureau, hunting up husbands for women and wives for men. Scarcely a day passes that he doesn't unite four or five couples. Merrill will attend the national convention of Elks at Rochester next week. E. A. RAN IJ ALL. WEDS. (Special to The Times.) Chicago, June'l. Edwin A. Randall of Gary was licensed here today to marry Miss Henrietta Werno of LaGrange, 111. ON VACATION. Master Bernard Szold left Gary this morning for the Gary school farm, where he will stay during tha summer vacation. It is said that the school farm is having a great deal of attraction, as the Gary boys are allowed to go there and stay during the summer vacation without expense. To earn their board and lodging they are required to do six hours' work each day. There Is also fine fishing and swimming nearby the farm DEATH OFPIONEER. Hammond and Gary friends and relatives of Jacob McCumsey of Ora. Ind., were shocked to learn of his death at the soldiers' home at Marion. Ind., yesterday morning where he died following a lingering illness of over a year. Death ia attributed to a stroke of paralysis. His son, Walter McCumsey of Hammond, left for Marion, Ind., yesterday afternoon and will return with the remains to Hammond some time today. Funeral services will be held from the residence at 264 Flummer avenue on Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'cloek. Mr. McCumsey was taken ill with a stroke of paralysis a year ago and since that time has been practically an invalid. About six weeks ago It was upon his request that he was taken to the old soldier's home at Marlon, Ind., where at times his condition became critical. News of his death was received yesterday morning. He was 70 years old and was wellknown in Hammond and Gary where he had made a number of extended visits. He resided on a small farm near Ora, Ind. He is survived by four children Mrs. George Coyle and Walter McCumsey of Hammond, Mrs. Coggens of Gary, and Mrs. J. McCarthy of Denver. MILLER. Mr. and Mrs. Tanner of Cleveland. O., are visiting at the horas of Mr. and Mrs. Fisher. Mrs, J. North and Mrs. M. Carpenter and children were Gary vigitors jesetrday. TOLLESTON. P. Fuse of Adrian, Mich., was a business visitor here yesterday. Miss Laura Bender of Cheltenham, 111., is the guest of Miss Helen ErickMiss I Lunger of Indianapolis Is the guest of Mrs .M.
