BROWNS
DAUB SOX
WITH WHITEWASH;
WALLOP BALL. 8-0
Mitchell Slaps on Paint, But
Cals Assist Him in the Application.
As If hopelessly ilnxed and helnlp-
ly conscious of the fact, the White Sox
bu omitted tamely to a whitewash yes
terday by another St. Louis pitcher
ana ne was not a son of Glbeah either
The nnal score was 8 to 0, and the
game looked worse than that to the
congregation or garters i. e.. Sox supporters. Roy Mitchell was the boy who slapped the white paint all over our boys, but It was not altogether his fault. The White Sox could have avnldnrl a
shutout by making some use of the
several openings they had In spite of Mitchell's best efforts. He had no hard task cut out for him. The Browns gave him a lead of three before he patched a ball, and that, proved more than sufficient. , Aid. Frank Lange started against the Browns, but was batted off the slab before we finished putting him In the score book, and there are only five letters In his stage name at that. A walk and two explosive biffs quickly convinced Manager Callahan It was no place for Lange and he substituted Doo White.
BOY SCOUTS IN CHICAGO RELAY RACE DELAYED Bad Roads Between Capital and Thurmont, Md., Slow Up Runners.
Thurmont, Md., June 25. After losV ing two hours because of bad roads. the boy soout relay runners carrying President Wilson's message to Mayor garrison of Chicago made up an hour of the loss between Frederick, Md., and this place. It was between Gaithersburg and Frederick that the road conditions caused the boy runners to lose time. At Gaithersburg the boys were half an hour ahead of their schedule, but after leaving that town they encountered stretches of almost impassable mud. The automobiles carrying relief runners were stalled several times and many of the boys ran over two or three relays because thare was noe on to meet them at the appointed stations. In other places the relays were cut down to a quarter of a mile, but in spite of heart-breaking efforts on the part of all the runners the message was two hours behind schedule when Fredericks was reached. Only by the pluckiest kind of work did the runners make up an hour of
this loss by the time Thurmont was reached. From there on the roads are said to be better and the boys have hopes of getting the message to Chicago ahead of the time set for Its delivery, next Saturday afternoon. Frederick T. M. C. A. boys made up the relay from that place to Emmetsburg, where Gettysburg runners came on until relieved by the squad of Thurmont boys that were lined up to keep up tile good work.

St. Louis, Mo., June 25. The Cubs
managed to get through one game of the double-header scheduled here yes
terday, but It required the aid of
brooms and a cartload of dust. After going to all the trouble thev had to
take a beating by the close count of 1 to 0. A thunder shower that skimmed the
west portion of the city prevented the first game. Two inni nflrs werA nver

one run while the Cubs had nothing. The storm struck suddenlv

Graney will serve both as promoter and referee of the Ritchie-Rivers fight on the afternoon of July 4. At a conference between the fighters and Promoter Graney yesterday the former blacksmith was chosen as third man in the ring after a number of names presented by each aide had been thrown into the discard. Jim Griffin
! who refereed the fight in which Ritchie i wrested the lightweight title from Ad ! Wolgast, was Ritchie's choice, but the
"tie nomer readily gave in when Manager Joe Levy, acting lor Rivers, suggested the name of Graney. It took less than ten minutes to decide this Important feature of the coming battle. "I was opposed to serving as referee so long as I was handling the fight." declared Graney. "Both sides insisted that I accept, however, and to avoid arguments I did so." Graney led a party of sport writers out to Seal Rock house to watch Joe Rivers go through his Daces vesterdav.
and while the Ijos. Angeles boy did not do much work, the scribes seemed sat
isfied with Joe's present condition.
Rivers spent about forty minutes in
the gymnasium and rerformri th
usual routine work that boxers generally undergo while training for an im
portant contest.
The challenger confined himself to
three rounds of boxing with Young Huddy. a Los Angeles welterweight, but the chances are that Huddy imagined that Joe was beating him up for an hour or so, for Rivers gave Huddy a first class walloping in the three rounds allotted to him.
