Mrs. Iavis. 835 Ada street, who left Hammond last Saturday night with her husband, Ir. J. Arthur Davis, for a week's stay with relatives at Niagara Falls, was severely injured in a Michigan Central railroad wreck at North Buxton, Canada, but is, according to reports received by Hammond friends yesterday, on the road to recovery. Dr Davis escaped with a few bruises. The accident happened about 2 o'clock Sunday morning. Mrs. Davis happened

to be on her feet at the time and was sent the length of three compartments in the Pullman in which they were riding. Vhlle she escaped without bone fractures, one of her hips was quite badly injured, and instead of

being abble to enjoy her visit as she expected to, she will have to remain in the care of a physician. They had intended to remain a week and are expected home early next week. Mrs.

Davis" mother of Indianapolis is at the Ada street residence, and during the

absence of her daughter has charge of

the latter's baby daughter.

Given to Buffet Man. Henry R, Schneider, proprietor of the Hammond buffet, was the recipient of a long, slim looking object which

came via parcel post this morning. For

a time Henry shied from the package

as he thought it might be either a

giant firecracker or a deadly explosive of some kind from a blackhand society.

After getting up a little courage

Henry cautiously unwrapped the heavy article and to his astonishment found

the package to contain one of Frank

WANTS KNOWLEDGE. So This Man Steals a Dictionary from Teacher. The Hammond police department has booked prisoners for nearly every offense imaginable, but this morning a new offense was sprung on them when a stranger giving his name as John Helde of Toronto, Canada, was arrested for stealing a Webster's unabridged dictionary. John said that he wanted money and knowledge, so he broke into the Gordon school house near Valparaiso yesterday morning and took tht dictionary and another book. He carried the heavy book all the way to Hammond where he came to grief early this morning when Officers Homrich and Horlbeck found him asleep at the north side ball park, and suspecting that he stole the dictionary with the Intention of selling it, he -was placed under arrest. Authorities will take him back to Valparaiso today.

that another girl had a grievance against Slickman, and so the genera! opinion is that he skipped to avoid trouble. His brother-in-law has the poolroom and Slickman is reported to be heavily Indebted to him.

A FISHING STORY. Four firemen from central station went fishing yesterday that is to say that the object of the excursion was to fish. Whether they did or not is a question being largely discussed at the station this morning for they offered on convincing proof upon their return except sun scorched faces and five

; little Insignificant fish that might have jbeen caught by a small boy with a bent pin for a hook. J Of course there is two sides to this narrative. The fisherman, John Reitz,

I Clyde Bowman. Godfrey Rosene and

Joe Flotshl tell the other one. They

hired a motor boat and journeyed to the government pier. It seems that the

j fish they captured were extremely

j large and are being quartered and (packed for shipment to Hammond.

They will come in a chartered car.

SLICKMAN DISAPPEARS FROM SIGHT Until quite recently Henry Slickman was sole proprietor of a poolroom in 179 East State street which brtught him a comfortable income with enough surplus to allow him a checking account in two banks. Today he Is an outcast, his whereabouts unknown, and his finances' shattered, his family in dispair and his business in strange hands. Since his disappearance last week no trace has been found of him and little hope is extended tnat he will return. Seme time ago Slickman was halui before Justice of the peace to answer the charges of a West Hammond gill. The matter is said to liave been settled out of court, the judge being the authority for this. It is reported

Tom Harle, business manager of the teamsters union, is out on the war path. He expects to Bcalp the railroads and for that purpose has enlisted the aid of the city council. He said today that he will plice a petition ir. the hands cf an alderman to be presented

to the' council at the regular meeting this evening. This petition will cover the entlr list of outrages that are being dally perpetrated by the railroads. The speed of trains, the condition of crossings, the inefficiency of watchmen, all will be included, and the council asked to aid in remedying the evil. The tragio death of John Prohl on the Clinton street crossing last week roused the council to action.

Couple Released.

There were two thirsty prisoners at the Hammond Central station this morning and very particular what kind of a beverage they drank at that. So Jimmy Trost thought when he was requested to go to the nearest drug quench the parched throats of Mr. and Mrs. George Moore, 311 Sibley street, Hammond, who were arrested yesterday morning on a charge of being In-
