THE TIMES. Fridav, Juno 13, 1913.

SIDELIGHTS ON GARY DEMOCRATIC "PRIMARIES." "While police force Is busy "guarding" the polls, crooks get active and commit many burglaries. Even rob the public library. Max Bernstein and other saloonmen opposing Tom Knotts last night received" word that their licenses are to be revoked by the mayor. The people of Gary do not blame the police force for their part in yesterday 'primaries." Either a policeman does' as he is told or out he geta. Except as to their carrying out their orders in intimidation the general behavior of the police was good and Chief Martin is not blamed because the burglars took advantage of the situation. More votes are said to have been cast by Ridge road democrats than there are voters in that district. Many drunken men in Gary last night. Six drunks in a rig drove up and down Broadway last night waving beer bottles and shouting for Tom Knotts. John A. Collins, general superintendent of the Gary Bolt & Screw works and candidate for alderman-at-large. was one of those doublecrossed by the Knotts men. City vehicles pressed into service in Knotts' behalf. Fire department crippled by compelling firemen to do political work against their will.

cago underneath. He sustained Injuries enumerated by Drs. O. O. Melton and A. V. Lloyd as a sprained back, internal Injuries and a sprained ankle. Girl la Injured. A young, lady was In the party. Miss Emma Conway, 1371 63rd street, Chicago, and her cries mingled with the groans and profane utterances of the men. Residents flocked ; to the scene and helped the injured Into their homes. They left later for South Chicago and the Oldsmoblle is today being repaired at the Square Deal garage. The body Is badly damaged, two wheels are broken, the running board in half and the lights and hood

are smashed. Tho occupants of the car were: Harry Tanner, chauffeur for Fred Peulecke, 9237 Houston avenue, South Chicago. Escaped without injuries. John Fugina, 9510 South Chicago avenue, sustained sprained back, injured shoulder and injury to his ear. Miss Emma Conway, 1371 63rd street, Chicago, sustained sprained wrist. Martin Vidie, 9441 Ewing avenue, South Chicago. Wrist fractured, sprains and bruises. Frank Gorcys, 9441 Ewingavenue, concussion as result of injury to head. Very ill at home today. Two other men who escaped injury and whose names were not taken.

BANQUET

Tonight will witness the closing event of the commencement week for the East Chicago high school the festivities winding up with the alumni banquet, which is an annual feature of the exercises and is held by the alumni

in honor of the graduating class. The banquet will be served at the Methodist church, the Ladies' Social Union being in charge. About 115 tickets have been disposed of and covers for this number will be laid at tables spread in the church dining room, the banquet to consist of five courses. Tho tables will be decorated in kilarney roses, the class flower and there will be an interesting program of toasts. Most of the members of the faculty and of the board of education are expected to be on hand. H. H. Clark, Jr.. president of the alumni will act as toastmastcr and a number of Interesting toast3 will be given. The banquet committee is com

posed of Claude Dreeson, Miss Edith

Bergland and Miss Leila Mercer and

the program committee embrances

Miss Vivien Williams. Charles McKelvey and Carrie Ross. After the banquet the company will adjourn to Wieland's hall where dancing will be enJoyed. Charles McKelvey and Bert Havill will provide the dance music.

HOW JOHN A. COLLINS WAS DOUBLE-CROSSED John A. Collins, the popular general manager of the Gary Bolt and Screw

works, was double-crossed by the

Knotts men at yesterday's "primaries'

but not until the afternoon. According to the story told Collins, Englehart and Oleska were listed for winning. Joe Morris, the south end politician got wind of the move tp "hook" him so he went to Tom Knotts and balled the mayor outMorris said that he had the entire Jewish vote with him, it is said, and that there would be "something doing" if any rough work was started. So in the afternoon the word went np and down the Knotts men to trim Collins and work for Morris instead.

Continued rmm Pair nnei in Gary a few months ago. The candidates for aldermen-at-large had a good bunch of voters working for them for their total is 9,145. Primaries" Disgrace- Farce. The "primaries" early m the day degenerated into a comic opera farce when Tom Knotts' police went out and ousted most of the election sheriffs named by the city central committee in conformance with the law. Then uniformed cops were placed at each polling place while others, plain clothes men. helped to electioneer for the "old man" and saw to it that everybody got a "square deal." I.Ike Sooth American Affair. Early in the day the Zawadzkt and

Castleman democrats were told to vamoose. Even Zawadzki was chased from the polls and Castleman himself was warned not to appear at any polling place under pain of being incarcerated in the "booby-hatch." Seing that Knotts and his police were in-full control of things Zawadzki and Castleman saw the uselessness of a fight and they at once filed contests. The idea expressed in the Knotts newspaper the other night that no one but Tom Knotts has a right to run for mayor of Gary was carried out to the letter by the police. Suddenly Run Out of Ballots. And when Zawadzki men did appear at the polls those having the latter's badges were either chased away or -in many instances given ballots already marked. Last night when upwards of 300 Zawadzki men went down to the

polling place in the Polish quarter at Seventeenth avenue and Massachusetts street the Judges found that they had "run out" of ballots The. men didn't get to vote. A 'om Knotta Affair. "If I had every democrat in Lake county over here voting for me today I would be counted out," stated Zawadzki early in the day. In a nutshell the democratic "prl- , maries" yesterday were nothing more than a packed convention on a large scale.. The police were there to let in but a few anti-Knotts men and many of those that, got inside were coerced into votin gfor the "old man." If previous elections In Gary have

been farces yesterday's was nothing

more than a one-man affair. The official returns: i For Mayor.
