CHICAGO WOW CLAIMS DISCOVERY
Says That Slush Fund is Being Subscribed to Open Gary Levee District Again
Somewhat of a sensation In Gary official dom was created this morning when a Chicago newspaper said that "Discovery was made yesterday that a slush fund of $10,000 has been raised In the westside underworld as a means to prying the lid off Gary. Ind., once more. Full reports have been made to Mrs. Gertrude Howe Britton of the Juvenile Protective association, and a summary probably will be mailed today by her to the governor of Indiana. "The disorderly resorts of the Indiana steel town were closed last week

SCARLET WOMEN IN GARY HOMECOMING FETE
Sold and guaranteed by Summers Pharmacy.
Judging from the sixty or seventy car I ( women (inmates of the Gary dives closed last week by Mayor Knotts) who returned to Gary yesterday afternoon and last night there must have been a relenting of the official order against their return to Gary. The women poured Into town yesterday afternoon, proving conclusively that Mayor Knotts clean up movement Is "pure bunk. As far as can be learned there was no opening of the dives last night although some of them were said to be doing a back door business. . With the return of the dive Inmates to Gary every indication points toward a re-opening of the democratic administration's "hell hole' as a Gary priest termed It In a sermon last Sunday. 'ews of the opening of the "hell hole" la engerly awaited by those who have the beer, laundry, leaning, clothes, and other "concessions."
Mrs.. Britton says, the fund has been collected. 'Mike de Pike' Heltler figures as one of the principals, and other notorious Chlcagoans are named. The contributors are generally those with an Interest in the deserted district. "Mrs. Britton wanted to send her Information to some one in authority In
the Gary territory, but is not confident
of any of the prosecutors. It was a row between some of the Interests, It
is charged, which precipitated Mayor Knotts order to close up the town. Now the slush fund holders want to reach 'some one' to get the lid eased off a bit, with a wide open town as the ultimate aim. "The Information to be forwarded the Indiana executive includes the stated amount of the fund, the names of the collectors, the names of the principal contributors, and the Interested officials to whom the pot was to go eventually after the collectors had deducted their 10 per cent. It Is asserted one reason for raising a big fund was the number of those inter
ested officials, so numerous that the
fund would have to be "split a lot o ways," as the collectors crudely expressed it.
"Meanwhile many of the former in
mates of the Gary levee are in Chi
cago cafes, waiting for the lid to be
removed. They say it will be only a
few days, and are not worrying. Many of them were forced to contribute to
the fund."
by Mayor Tom Knots. Interests which once controlled a big part of Chicago's old west side district have been operating extensively in Gary, and there.

CAItl AND KNOTTS AT LOGGERHEADS?
The breach between Mayor Knotts and the former boss of his administration Bill Cain, late of the Gary city hall contracting gang, has assumed
serious proportions and there Is some talk of Cain financing a fight against Knotts in the forthcoming primaries.
Cain has been shut off from getting

His backers assert that his candidacy would attract hundreds who want a business administration.
