CUBS TO TACKLE PIRATES TODAY Evers' Squad Due Home Tomorrow After One Day Stay at Pittsburgh.
Pittsburgh. Pa., May 2. Somewhat mangled and considerably distressed because of their unfortunate eastern trip, the Cubs reached Pittsburgh yesterday afternoon. Today they will
battle the Pirates, after which they will return to the home grounds. .Seven of the crew, six pitchers and a catcher, went through from Buffalo to Chicago. Manager Evers brought four hurlers here for the one combat, but hasn't made up his mind which one will start the game today. He had intended to use Larry Cheney In the final game at Boston, then ship him home, but as the
Thursday contest was postponed Cheney was brought here and is likely to be sent against the Pirates. The other hurlers are Smith. LelfJeld and Lavender. As Cheney hasn't fully recovered
from his illness the manager would like to let htm rest at least another day. He may use Larry here to save the game if occasion demands It, then put him against St. Louis on the home grounds on Sunday. Charley Smith has his bum hand healed and feels ready to tackle the Pirates.

To the accompaniment of a brass
band and several vocalists, an automo-
oiie parade through the loop, and a
raid on several north side florists, Chi
cago's federal league season was open-
eo yesterday at ue faul field with a defeat, of Bert Keeley's local nine by the Pittsburgh Filllplnos, 7 to 1.
Because of an open date in White
Sox and Cubs home schedules, all the
trimmings were set for a big league
opening. Sheriff Michael Zimmer wound up in regulation style and
hurled the first ball across the plate into the waiting mitt of Catcher McDonough. Staff photographers and moving picture men sealed the classic features of the two nines and the local
officials.

Indianapolis, Ind., May 24. Ralph
De Palma yesterday established the
fact that his Mercer will be a formld
able candidate for first honors In the
600-mile race here on Memorial day
He thcew the yellow machine 100 miles around the track, averaging eightyseven miles an hour for the distance. This is the most sensational perform
ance of the season and dispels the
doubt that the Mercer might not be
serious contender in the splendid field
of fast cars. It also proves the Ital ian's nerve Is unaffected by his aocl
dent in the Grand Prise at Milwaukee
last year.
De Palma was testing tires whan
he hung up the record. lie . blew put
two tires in the hundred miles.
Next to De Palma's trial, the work of the Sunbeam, with Albert Guyot driving, was the feature of the day's
practloe. The Sunbeam's exhibition
proved It to be ideal tor the track, and
all who saw Guyot's driving oonoeded the English machine a chanoe to win.
The conduct of the car on the carves was excellent despite Its extreme
length. Although it was Guyot's first
spin, he averaged seventy-five miles
an hour for all of six laps. The Sun
beam really Is the only car which la conceded a chanoe of victory in the
race, the Mercedes-Knight and Peu-
geota having demonstrated no extra
ordinary adaptability to the course.
