FIGURES IN TAX INCREASES (Continued from Pass one) Gary & Interurban Railway Company, the Goshen, South Bend & Chicago Railroad Company, the Gary Connecting Railways Company, and the Valpa raiso & Northern Railway Company. These four roads were appraised sepa rately last year and the valuation of the single holding road this year ex ceeds materially the total valuation of all last year. This year the road has 73.76 miles of main track and .39 miles of side track. The rolling stock of the four roads last year remained unchanged under the new management this year. Last year the main track mileage of the four roads was 57.67, with .34 miles of side track. The increase this year in the main track was 16.09 miles and in the side track,. 05 miles. The total valuation of the four roads last year was $446,425 for main track and in 1913 the same total for the Gary & Inter urban was $649,088. The total valua tion of the four roads for side track in 1912 was $645, and this year it was decreased to $585. The total valuation for rolling stock in 1912 was $27,271. and In 1913 It Jumped to $59,008. In 1913 the total valuation for Improvements of the single road was $30,500, and the figures were the same for 1912. The total Increase in valuation of all property of the road this year was j $234,340, the valuation this year being $739,181, against $504,841 last year. Rate of Appralaement. The rate of the appraisement by the state board of the new Gary line was $8,800 a mile for its main track this year and for the Indiana Railways and Light Company the rate was $7,110 for main trackage. These two companies were responsible for $439,841 of the In crease in the valuation of all the roads of the state. The additional Increases that made up the total, $996,(01, were made by the state board In its efforts to bring the valuation of the lnterurbans to a more nearly equalised basis throughout the state. One other interurban. appraised at a higher rate because of the attempts to equalize, was the Chicago, South Bend & Northern Indiana Railway Company. It was responsible for $103,062 of the total Increase. This increase was due to an increase of 1.04 miles in its main track and the raising of the rate by the board. The Chicago Telephone Company contributed to the general increase, be ing appraised for a total of $552,747 last year. This year's figures showed $633,483. This company took over the Northwestern Telephone Company, of Lowell. Ind., appraised last year at $5,700. The Increase of valuation against the Chicago & Erie road, because of an In crease In the mileage of its side tracks and a raise from $2,500 to $3,000 a mile by the board, amounted to $127,815. The Chicago, Indianapolis & Louis ville showed an increase of approximatelv $14,000 because of increased side track mileage. The Chicago, Terre Haute & Southeastern showed an Increase of approximately $14,000 for the same reasons. The Chicago extension of the latter road had an Increase of approximately $16,000 because of about eight miles increase in side trackage. The Grand Rapids & Indiana had a similar Increase amounting to about $9,000. The Baltimore, Ohio & Chicago last year was appraised at $30,000 a mile main track, the mileage being 146.33. The valuation was raised to $31,000 a mile this year, making a total Increase of $146,330. The second main track mileage of the road increased consideraly, jumping 11.79 miles, principally because of extensions in Kosciusko county. The valuation of second main track remained the same as last year at $8,000 a mile. The total Increase from that source was $94,320. The total valuation of this one road was almost a quarter of a million dollars higher than last year. The Chicago, Lake Shore & Eastern's valuation on Its 10.36 miles of main track in the estate was raised from

The same road had an Increase of approximately $15,000 In side track valuation, due to increased mileage. More This Year. The Elgin. Joliet & Eastern was appraised at $33,000 a mile on its main track last year and was raised to $35,000 a mile this year, making an increase for Us 42.02 miles of main track of $84,010. The Chicago, Indiana & Southern railroad's Danville division (property of the New York Central lines) was responsible for an increase of $100,760 in main track valuation and $15,000 In side track valuation, the lat ter being due to an increase In mileage of 6.20 miles. The board raised the road's main track valuation from $20,000 to $21,000 a mile. Other Classes. There was an Increase In the total valuation of all classes of property, ap praised by the board, exclusive ot steam and interurban railroads, of $1. 648,299, the total valuation of these six classes of property, being $32,448,221. Last year the total valuation for the same classes of property. Including telephone companies .telegraph com panies, pipe line companies, transportation companies, express companies and sleeping car companies was $300.800.122. JAILED AFTER MAKING THREATS Tony and Donaca Dedato. the former of whom gave, his place of residence as 1115 Johnson street, Chicago, and the latter as 1028 Johnson street, both of them Italians and scissors grinders by trade, were lodged in the East Chicago Jail today. The men were charged with assault with deadly weapons, the weapons in question being murderous knives which they had sharpened for certain customers on the south side and about payment for which service a dispute arose. A complaint reached Sergeant Mike Gorman to the effect that the Italians were about to murder somebody If the police didn't hurry end nip their violent project in the bud. The patrol was rushed to the scene and the arrest of the two Italians followed. FORMER JOLTET MAYOR DEAD (Special to Thi Times.) Joliet. 111., May 23. John R. Cronln. twice mayor of Joliet. manager of the Joliet Oil Refining company for the past eighteen months, and a lifelong resident of this city, died yesterday at ' St. Joseph's hospital, after an illness of three days. The direct cause of death was due to paralysis of the bowels, brought on by an attack of appendicitis.
