STEEL BARS STRONG. Steel makers have noted the con tinued demand for merchant bars with satisfaction, as many of them consider demand for the bar products an ex cellent Darometer or steel trade pondlt!ns. Buying of merchant bars has been for all deliveries to the end of the year, with specifications heavy enough to Insure production at capacl ty to near the end of 1913. Inquiries for capacity during the next month or two continue, with little available, and so orders for near shipments are hard to place. The larger mills have received some orders for first and second quarter shipment of bars next year. with others among the smaller Inde pendents well up to a year from now, While some reductions In premiums on steel bars were made recently little of this production can be obtained for prompt shipments In the few casei where such can be made save at pre miums close to the highest for the year. Buying of structural steel has been in fair volume and better in propor tion than has been the rule for other steel products during the dull period of the last few weeks. Many mills have practically no available capacity for five or six months to come and struc tural orders are expected to hold up sufficiently to insure a fair tonnage on the books at the end of the year, if not as much in this line as at pres ent. Some sales of southern iron have been reported in the Birmingham district at $11.25 a ton, or the lowest In over a year. Orders have not been large even at' the lower level of values Offerings at. $12 a ton have been freely made, but'without buyers appearing. STEEL BUYERS ARE WAITING In spite of the fact that steel ton nages In unfilled orders declined In a marked degree during the last week, there Is a firm belief In the minds of those who are In a position to know that a turn for the better Is not far distant. Tariff legislation Is considered to have been a primary factor In retarding sales, but with the possi bilities of that matter being settled In the near future It Is though that contractors and railroads will begtn the replenishing of their supply, which by this time must be very nearly exhausted. In view of the enormous amount of consumption which has been going on. While some furnaces have nearly completed their orders, the majority are still working to their full capacity and have enough orders In sight to operate through the entire third quar ter, which is now but six weeks away. With this condition prevailing It Is not likely that the price of the heavier products, such as plates, shapes and bars, will be very materially reduced, if at all. The pig iron market is still far from normRl, and in many instances thl commodity is being sold at a dead loss, which is considered preferable to carrying the stock on hand. This condition is especially so with furnaces which have no ore reserve of their own and are forced to buy from other mills. B. P. O. E. TO CONSERVE ELKS Livingston, Mont., May 20. Options have been obtained on between 6,000 and 6,000 acres of land near the Yellowstone National park to be used as a preserve for elk, according to the announcement made by Livingston lodge No. 246, Brotherhood of Protective Order of Elks.
