The first annual banquet ot the E., J. & E. railway men was given under the auspices of the railway extension committee at the Gary T. M. C A. last night. Ex-Congressman J. Adam Bede of Minnesota, the noted humorist, was the chief speaker of the evening. There were 147 guests present at the feast, the banquet being held In the big gymnasium. John Kirk, superintendent of the Gary division ot the railway, was the toastmaster. The menu: Olives. Gherkins. Radishes. Celery. Cream of Celery Soup. Lake Trout Sauce Tartar. Roast Domestic . Duck with Dressing. Creamed Potatoes. June Peas. Strawberry Ice. Fruit Salad. New York Ice Cream. French Pastry. Coffee. Cheese. Bentz' W'aterCrackers. Cigars. The program: John Kirk, toastmaster.

Highlands and Munster. The trustees of both towns and the presidents of the
town boards were present.
All Want Line Built. There was perfect unanimity of opin
ion on the matter ot the need of trans
portation facilities between Hammond
and these two towns. The fact was pointed out that the Green line, extending through the principal streets of the cities of Hammond, East Chica
go and Munster, Is the line they want
built through their towns.
The Munster and H'ghlands visitors indicated that they would show a
preference for the Hammond line pro
viding its franchise was considered a fair one. Speeches were made by nearly every one present. Most of the speakers dwelled on the need of placing the great truck farming district to the southward in communication with Hammond. The principle desire seemed to be to get the line built within a year and this the company has agreed to do. The company will also give an Indemnifying bond with the understanding that It Is forfeited if the company fails to comply with the terms of the franchise contract within the year. Board Approves. . This morning Manager II. C. Green of the line appeared before the mem
bers of the board of public works and submitted his franchise. The fran
chise was read by John I Rohde, the president of the board, who said that it
looked all right to him with the ex
ception that he wanted a provision
made for an indemnifying bond and he wanted an explicit statement made that the company would not only build but would operate the line -within the year.
These changes were made and re
draft of the franchise was ordered drawn mbodying these features. This will receive the official approval of the
board members later.

The death has occurred of Mrs. Ma rie Louse Kohlof, wife of Peter Kohl
of, who died at 11:30 o'clock last night at the Gary General hospital. Mrs.
Kohlof was 31 years old.
Funeral arrangements will be made
today. The funeral will be held, prob
