Trojans Score Two Runs In
Final, Reds Get One, Then ExCub Fails in Pinch.
ing Clash When Collins Misses Fly in Ninth.
' Cincinnati. O.. April 22. Eleven innigs of frenzied baseball wera required to1 settle the second scrap In history between the teams led by Evers and Tinker, and the finish yesterday wu 7 to S In favor of the Cubs. It was a lot closer than that, for after the Trojans had won and lost and
tied up and then won the frame again, he Tinkers came- back to hard in the last half of the eleventh round that Evera, who already had used two pitchers against the Reds, had to call In Larry Cheney, the Elg Moose of the Cubs, to hold the hard earned victory. And Cheney could not stop that final assault until victory or defeat hung on one play. There were two Red on bases within striking distance of the plate, where only a base hit was needed to win the game, and Joe Tinker, the Red leader, was the man who faced Cheney In that pinch. Tinker File Oat ! Pinch. It was a battle royal, that last one, until the count was two and three on the batsman, forcing Cheney to groove one or walk Tinker. Joe knew It, and laid for the groover, but whaled It too high la the air. It came down in Otey Clymer's fists and the long battle was over.
ST. JOSEPH, 3; STXAVIER, 1. Renselaer, Ind., April 22. The St. Joseph's college baseball team opened the season yesterday with a 3 to 1 victory over St. Xavler. Llll, for St. Joseph's, struck out seventeen men and allowed only three hits. Landott struck out twelve. Score: St. Joseph 10000001 1 3 5 0 St. Xavler 00010000 0 1 5 1
Even without Ty Cobb Detroits Tig
ers proved strong enough to nose out
the White Sox in thel first encounter
of the year at Comlskey park yester
day. The score was 3 to 2, and It was the fourth straight dropped by the Sox,
which has shoved them into the second
division.
Everything about the game was close and the Sox always were on the wrong
end. There were two or three close
decisions, all against Chicago. There
were several close plays and the Sox
got the worst of all of them. The game finally wound up In a ninth inning fracas in which Collins missed a fly ball by an inch which enabled the
Tigers to get the run needed to win.
Troper defensive playing would have
given the Sox the game by a score of
2 to 1, and such a scora would have
been fitting to the class of pitching
Manager Callahan sent his new south
paw, Albert Russell, to the slab and
the husky Texas boy hurled winning ball. He was guilty of two balks because he hasn't been accustomed to big league base running, but neither of the balks cost him the game.
CHARLEY WHITE STOPS THOMAS. New Orleans, La., April 22. Charley White of Chicago administered a severe trimming to Joe Thomas of this city last night and In the ninth round the sponge was tshrown into the ring to save Thomas from being knocked out. The bout was scheduled for ten rounds. It was White's fight all the way.

REFEREE HALTS
BRITTON GO.
Philadelphia. Pa., April 22. After
exchanging love taps for four rounds, the six round bout between Jack Brit-
ton, the crack lightweight of Chicago,
and "Pal" Moore of this city, was stopped last night at the Olympla Ath
letic club by Referee Billy Rocap. The two fighters were hissed when they left the ring. The refree was cheered.
From the start Britten showed only a mild interest in the bout. He declined
to take advantage of openings or fol
low his leads. Both fighters acted as
if they were going through an exercise stunt. Moore plainly""was out of con
dition and the bout was the rawest proposition ever served in the roped
arena here.
