The growth of the Fetrolene Co. has
been nothing slfort of miraculous. It
was organized in 1901 by J. E. Wads-

name of the Elarlte Paint Co. On Feb.
27, 1903, the company was incorpor
ated and the name changed to the Petrolene Co. having at this time 284
square feet of floor space. In seven years the floor space was increased more than eighty times the original
area. The manufacture of the floor
cloth representing quarter-sawed oak
was begun in 1905. The sales for the product the first year amounted to $10,-
482. 3S and in fltre years had been in
creased more than twelve times. This
product is being shipped from coast to coast, and from Hudson Bay to the Gulf
of Mexico. The news of further in
creasing the size of the plant will be
hailed with great joy by the Whiting citizens, as it will more than double the force at present employed. For the past few years Starr Stowell has been
traveling for the company, but at the
last meeting of the officers he was ap

of Eagles.
Every seat was taken and judging
from the uproarious applause tha
greeted the clever sallies of the bone
and the tambos, and the stunts of th
"specialty performers, there was no doubt that the crowd got the worth
of their money.
The performance opened with th
usual array of black faced artists , on
the stage, with John Casey as inter
locutor, Philip Busch and Dr. F. W
Sauer as tambos, Al Murphy and R.
Copeland as bones. Henry Robel, Wal
ter Pouter, John Goodall, Frank Dixon
and Con Carlson as soloists. On
raised dais wer seated Ed O'Donnell
and Judge George Reiland, who ha
nothing to say but added color and
beauty to the spectacle. Casey was

every soloist was an artist In his par

Methodist
Girls' Social club, church.
The plays, which are both short, one
act productions, and "Miss Clviliza-
ion" and "The Model Husband," the
fomer a clever sketch by Richard Harding Davis, quite different from
nything- that has "yet been produced
by local amateur talent, and the latter
pleasant comedy, full of fun and
uldicrous situations.
The Girls' Social club is not new to
this sort of thing, and has twice ln the past given performances that have
one credit to the participants artisti
cally, and profited exceedingly the Methodist church for the benefit of which the entertainments have been given. The one now in hand promises
to be considerably better than anything yet done by the talented coterie
of young people. There are several
reasons for this. One of them is increased experience along historic lines, additional talent not heretofore tak-
ng part, and last but not least the
fact that he amateurs are being coached by Mr. Harry Ward, formerly prom-
nently identified with the dramatic or
ganisation of Cornell university, and who has had large and varied experi
ence in taking part in shows all over the country.
That Mr. Ward is highly pleased
himself with the progress being made by those who are to take part in the
two playlets, promises volumes In fa
vor of the finished production . next
Saturday.
'Miss Civilization" although not a
farce In the strict sense of the word.
is along the general lines of a farce and is" decidedly out of the general run of selections usually chosen by the av
erage amateur players.
It deals with some bold bad burglars
who enter Miss Civilization's home, and
whom the heroine detains while help
s being hustled to the scene from out
side. The methods of the heroine are artful and effective and the play may serve as a liberal education in the
ways of handling burglars to the house-holders who may sometime be
called upon to deal with this partlcu-
ar brand of parasites In their own
homes.
Miss Maud Williams wil be seen in
the title role, Harry Ward Is one of
the burglars as are Will Faison and
Mr. Carpenter. Then there are a number of minor parts which "come on"
In a sort of a mob scene which the
play closes, when the burglars get
what is coming to them.
In the "Model Husband," "Jimmie"'
Johnston, whose clever acting has
made & distinct hit in Indiana Harbor
on more than one occasion, is the
main character. He i a model in the scene that he Is roped in to serve as
model for his wife to drape and hang
her skirts on. Miss Mabel Lennon Is
the wife, Mr. James Spittle and MUs Edna, Burkman are respectively Mr.
and Mrs. Plover and Miss Agnes Stor-
mont is Maggie, the maid. Will Col
lins Is the doctor.

CITY PRINTING GRAFT
TO BE AIRED IN COURTS
A taxpayer will take steps to stop
part of the city printing graft of the
Gary Tribune. Through the influence
of a city official who Is also an officer
ln ' the Tribune company the city of
dreds of dollars annually because of his illegal actlans.
Incidentally the effort to prevent the
further looting of the city treasury by placing a legal padlock on it steps will be taken to compel City Treasurer E. C. Simpson, city treasurer and Tribune stockholder, to return every penny that
he is charged with illegally spending
in the past four years by causing to be
inserted in the Tribune, in which he shares in the profits, notices that have
cost the taxpayers much money.
Simpson's actions will be brought to
the attention of the state board of accountants ln connection with the tax
payer's suit. The Indiana law provides a heavy penalty for city officials who are lntereste din city contracts.
The state board of accounts in Its
Inspection of books in various parts of the state have compelled officials to
pay out of their own pocket moneys which they have spent without au
thorization or funds diverted to channels which will render them a profit.
Simpson, not long ago got stung for
$466 Some of his high handed pro
ceedings when without the authoriza
tion of Mayor Knotts and the members
of the. city council he proceeded to
hire lawyers to fight the saloonmen of Gary whereby each one had to pay an extra sum of $300, the most of which
went by way of city deposits into his
bank, the First National, of which the
Hon. Homer Carr of Baloon remonstrance fame Is a director. Simpson then had the nerve to put in a bill for $466 for legal fees but which the council wisely refused to pay as the state statutes provide a penitentiary sentence for any official who without au
thorization by appropriation pays out
money for the city.
