State Headquarters Receives Encouraging News From AH Over the State; Democrats Who Hanker for Jobs Will Have to Wait a Long Time Before Their Appetite for Pie Is Satisfied.
TIMKS BI MKU AT THK ST ATfcJ C APITA I Indianapolis. Ind.. April 17. Reports of the most encouraging character are received daily at the republican state headquarters from over the state. And republicans who come to the city bring with them similar news of political conditions In their respective counties. According to these reports the progressives are dwindling and their strength of last year appears to be but a mere shadow of what it was 'then. The results of the recent elections in Chicago, St Louis and Michigan appear to have put a crimp In the progressive party movement in this state. The progressives fell so far behind in these elections that it proved to be a serious discouragement. For instance, in Michigan. last fall the progressives elected their presidential electors by a plurality of more than 60,000. This year ran n poor third. Whether these election results have caused it or not, the progressives in various parts of the state are making overtures to the republicans for Joint nominations this year for city offices. It is not the republicans that are asking for this arrangement. The suggestions come from the progressives. As far as can be learned the proposition has not met with any favor among republicans. It is thought that the progressives are afraid to show their strength at the coming city elections, for it will probably be so light as to put the party In a bad position. It is thought that they would prefer to wait till next year and make another fight at a state election. If they could get the republicans to combine with them this year they could then blame it on the republicans if the fusion ticket failed to win out at any place. Republicans are taking a phoeful
view of the situation, and they believe that their party is regaining its oldtime commanding position in the poltlcal field of the country. Th fact is that thi progressives in this state appear Just now to be fiondorlng around in very deep water. Everybody recognises the fact that this is the year that that party must make a showing to save Itself for a quick death. Unless It is able to do this it is believe that it will never have another chance, because voters who joined in that movement last year will feet that it is about time to drift bacn home to their old party. It Is realized now by the Indiana democrats who have been hankering for federal jobs under the new administration that they will have to wait a long time before their appetites can be satisfied. It is evident that President Wilson is something of a politician hlmelf. He has a session of congress on his hands, and there are some things that he wants that congress to do. He wants it to revise the tariff downward and he is not going to allow anything to stand in the way if he can help It. He also wants some currency legislation and banking legislation and some other things, and nothing is to stand In the way of these, either. So, according to the present information, the president is going to let the matter' of federal appointments lie for
a time until after congress is through. In that way, it is pointed out, he can keep in line, probably, some senators and representatives who might otherwise kick over the traces on some of
the tariff items.
The general understanding here is that no federal appointments for Indiana will be made until after the close
of the special session of congress. This
means. that the appointment nf ptr

for appointments will not necessarily be sufficient to land the jobs. Heretofore, a recommendation by a senator has always been the final word on which the president has made appointments. Now, however, the "recommendation of a senator is to be taken for what it is worth, and President-Wilson will make up his own mind whether the applicant is a worthy man. In other words, the president proposes to make his own appointments, and this is causing some uneasiness among Indiana democrats who thought they had cinches on some of the Jobs.

PEIXS RIVAL WITH STONE. Harry Carvin," 1435 Marlow avenue, Indianapolis, was struck on the head
and knocked to the ground in front of
the residence of James Nieman, 634 West Thirty-first street, Tuesday by a stone said to have been thrown by William Moore, a singer employed at a moving picture show. Miss Jennie Nieman, with whom Carvin was walking, said Moore was jealous because she recently told htm to cease calling on her. She said Moore stepped in front of them and without a word hurled the stone that brought Carvin to the ground. Carvin was carried to the Nieman home and the attending physician said he was not seriously injured. Although the police looked for Moore they were unable to find him last night.
