Society folk of Hammond, "Whiting, Gary and East Chicago harked back to the good-old fashioned days at the Hammond Country Club last night when a unique and very diverting box social was held In the midst of a very enjoyable dancing party and followed by several amusing: contests. About 100 attended the affair which was staged in the ballroom. The party had been arranged by a committee of ladles consisting of Mesdames George Hannauer. T. W. Oberlln. H. E. Bharrer. C. G. Klngwlll and Kay Chapman, and the ladies acted as escorts and the men
as wall flowers. Rigid rules were enforced against the crossing of the ball room by the gentlemen unescorted and
fines were collected from the latter by
Mrs. W. U Craig for unladylike tactics
such as going to the grillroom alone
The auctioning off of the boxes
furnished a lot of amusement, w. J.
McAleer assisted by H. E. Sharrer and
J. F. Sawyer had charge of this task
and nearly 50 boxes of tempting eatables bringing In price from $1.50 to
$2.60 were sold under the hammer. A handsome umbrella was given Mrs. Walter Smith for guessing correctly the greatest number of those who were carded as box-buyers. An amusing
contest was held also for the gentlemen who engaged in describing the gown worn by their partners some of the descriptions given were excruciatingly funny to the ladles. Especially good were the descriptions given by B. L. r. Bell, Dr. T. W. Oberlin. W. P. Ray and Henry Loverldge. The prize, a humidor was won by P. A. Parry. Cabaret stunts in the grillroom concluded the program. The old-fashioned concert next Thursday night gives promise of being one of the most
amusing events given this season by
the club.
