S4.000.000 MORTGAGE

IS GIVEN

The Gary Heat, Light' and "Water company, a subsidiary of the United States Steel corporation and one of its most prolific dividend earners has given a $4,000,000 mortgage upon its Gary properties to the Continental Trust and Savings bank of Chicago as trustee. " To Issue Bonds. Local officials who have no hand In the financial policy of the company are unable to state the object of the mortgage plan but It is believed to be the forerunner of a bond Issue announcement. The Gary water works, electrlo and gas lighting system was built by tho steel corporation out of Its surplus funds and It is believed that the $4,000,000 bond issue is to replace tbe moneys thus taken. Last year the corporation authorited a $40,000,000 bond Issue on Gary works to replace in part the $77,000,000 taken from the suplus funds to build the plan. Of this amount $15.000,000 has already been Issued. faauiT Gets Deeds.

Records at Crown Point show that the Gary Land company has given a warranty deed to the gas company for

the pumping station site In Jefferson park and acreage In sections 4 and 9. near the steel works. A one dollar, consideration Is named In each Instance. The corporation In building the Gary water works and tunnel system spent over $1,000,000 on this work alone.

President Wilson delivering messege to Congress. When President Wilson delivered his message in person to congress the other day h broke a precedent which had been growing for 112 years. Little complaint was heard from congressmen, however. Senators and representatives were all present in the House of Representatives to hear the address, and the galleries were crowded. The last president to speak personally to congress was John Adams, the second president.

street they took charge of a tool wagon belonging to DUle & Harris, contractors. Xo Restraint Shown. City and county authorities were on the scene to receive the clamoring university boys. Bricks, bottles and clubs were the weapons of the mob, while the squad of officers met the attack with the swinging clubs and drawn revolvers. Windows In the opera house and jail were broken, those In sn interurban car were smashed with clubs, and an arc light at the Methodist

church corner was knocked out by a brick. Windows and furniture In the Reddington resort on South Franklin avenue were broken, men were badly bruised and bleeding, and two students went to the hospital with broken arms. Nine were Jailed, and Officers Stansell and Rltz were knocked down with clubs. Maay Fights Easue. Fight after fight ensued. Officers snatched from out of the mob their first prisoner, a man by the name of Cooper. With his garments nearly torn off he was landed in Jail. Later McDonald was caught, and soon after Brown and Hull were captured. The first shots came from the guns of

came across the street In their direction from the opposite side of the thoroughfare. Now came the fusillade of bricks and stones at the Jail and theatre, and again the shots rang out as the disorderly crowd went rushing by hurling missies. Two windows in the jail were broken and one in the opera house. Threat to Kill. The excitement became Intense. Offi

cers were at a high pitch of anger; j numerous threats Were heard, both on (the part of citizens and students, and .It looked as thought blood would be

shed. "All Valparaiso people get out of the crowd," shouted a deputy; "we are going to shoot to kill," and the crowd began to disperse, slowly but surely. In the west - windows of the Jail sat men armed with heavy guns, and Sheriff Llndall carried a shotgun, with determination outlined iri his features. Officers began to surge through the crowd ordering all to their homes, and some were arrested who refused to obey. Police Are On Jump. While conditions were becoming normal at this point, trouble was brewing farther south, where a crowd was in conference on the corner of Monroe street and Franklin avenue. A little later the officers were called by telephone to the Redding resort, where It was reported that the mob was demolishing the building and It scontents.

charges are preferred, one for disturb

HUSBAND OF GARY GIRL SENTENCED Bogus Lord Lands in South African Prison. "Sir" Harry Westwood Cooper, who married Miss Anna Mllbrath of South Chicago and Gary, his seventh wife, apd deserted her after obtaining money from her father, has been sentenced to hard labor at Durbin, South Africa, according to word received In Chicago yesterday. Cooper, who has left a trail of wives throughout the country, married Miss Mllbrath In Oakland, Cal., where she was living with her father. He was known to her as Dr. Milton Abraham, and succeeded In getting $1,000 from Mr. Milbrath on the strength of a "delayed Inheritance." He fled from California last February after being detected in an attempt to cash a spurious draft for $15,000,
