Another time when the Sox were about to overcome the prowess of Jackaon, with two men on the bases and two out. the southerner raced back almost to the wall and caught a line drive by Jim Scott that should have been a double good for two runs. Cleveland, O., April 12. Joe Jackson . battered down the defense of the White Sox and Cleveland won the opening game of the season yesterday from -Chicago in a contest filled with thrills and excitement. The score was 3 to 1. ' " Every time Jackson went to bat he clouted the ball. Twice' he slammed drives against the concrete wall in 'right field, once for a double and once .for a triple. The other time he slashed a liner along the left foul line for two ' bases. He scored two of the three runs

By knocking the works completely out of the National league schedule and half of the American league program yesterday the weather bureau did its best to convince baseball magnates that trying to open the baseball sea

son right after town meeting day Is a

hazardous and costly experiment.

The sage who wrote "experimentla

docet" lived before the days of base

ball magnates.

Another effort will be made today

to pry the stopper out of the local sea

son, and the announcement is officially

made that the twice postponed features will be retained on the card un til the opening does come off, no mat ter if It Is delayed until next week.

The Cubs escaped vaccination, partly because the reports coming from Min

neapolis were found to be like baseball

attendance figures slightly overesti

mated. The first rumor crediting two

Minneapolis players with smallpox in

fection was reduced Thursday night by

half, and yesterday's developments

were to the effect that the other half of the scare was untrue. In other

words, there wasn't sign of the dread

disease in the Cantlllon camp.

The trimming of the tar by His

Spikelets came as a big surprise to al

most everybody, Including the writer. Kelly was the better all the way at both Infighting and outfighting. Wal

ters held htm fairly even until the sev

enth round at that, but then the Harp

cut loose and the lead he had at the end of that period was sufficient to make the victory a certainty unless Billy happened to upset him.

In that round Walters took a lick

ing that dazed the sailor lads in the

audience. Kelly was getting home with

the one-two hooks, jolts and uppercuts.

while Walters did not land a single solid punch In return. Spike's wind left him, the pace was so fast, else

he might have sent the tough tar to

the canvas. But he failed to do this

at any stage of the struggle.

Walters won only one roud, the

fourth, piled up the big share of polts

in five fighting periods and the rest

were even. Kelly Is a pretty good two-handed fighter, we must admit. He has to be pretty good to make Bill Walters look bad and he surely did that little trick. We have seen the sailor box often, but he showed up In amateurish form this time. It can be said with all truth that Bill did not land one punch that shook his lanky foe.

New York, April 13. "Gunboat" !

Smith struck a snag In George Rodel. the Boer heavyweight, in a ten-round bout at the Forty-Fourth Street Sport-!

ing club last night.

Smith -scored five clean knockdowns.

but Rodel had the better of six rounds

on clean hitting. If he had finished Btronger he might have secured a draw. Smith violated the boxing rules by holding and hitting and by hitting on the breakaway, offenses which were

allowed to pass unnoticed by Referee

Sammy Kelly.

It was a fierce, sanguinary battle all

the way. Rodel, believed to be an easy

mark, furnished a surprise. He was

strong and game, aVid showed an un

expected knowledge of how to use the!

left hand. With solid left hand Jabs

he made Smith's nose bleed In the first

round, the "Gunboat" found it impossible to connect with his famous right swing. Rodel won this round on points and also showed superiority In the sec

ond period. Smith the ntrled rushing tactics, and landed several half punches in the region of the Boer's heart, but Rodel more than evened this up by sending Smith to a corner and rocking him with a series of right swings on the neck and Jaw. Rodel was the master In the third round. Smith's rushes were met with clean left hand smashes. Smith was staggered by a left hand 'and a right hand swing on the head and was forced to assume the defensive. The fourth was the worst one for the Boer, and thereafter Smith showed better staying power, scoring five knockdowns.

Tommy Illayok's sled was not In sight. , Allan's and Dalsene's dogs were In excellent condition, but Johnson's had not fared so well. He was carrying two of them on his sled. One wrenched a leg before reaching Council, 85 miles out, and probably will have to be carried the remainder of the Journey. Several expert drivers today said Johnson made a mistake In taking out twenty-one dogs. Weather conditions are favorable, and fast time Is belag triad e The winner will receive 60 per cent of a $5,000 purse.
