ble followed, a free for all fight was
precipitated and In the mixun Aller
ton s revolver was discharged and Peter Creatsoulas was mortally
wounded.
In his review of the case before the
jury Attorney Rapier of Gary said:
"If you were to place the responsibili
ty for this unfortunate affair where
it belongs you would place it at the
door of the police of Gary who per
mit such places to continue in opera
tion and on the office of the prose
cutor who does not do his duty."
Those who sat in the court room
and heard one witness after another
tell of the various phases of the
gambling business and not a single
denial that such conditions exist were
appall.?d at the open, brazen defiance
of the law that was revealed by this
case.
They begin to understand why Thomas E. Knotts, the present mayor
of Gary found it necessary to sub
sidize both the Gary Post and the
Gary Tribune by admitting them to
the public printing trough.
And the people of the Calumet cora-
muniiies begin to understand whv
Gary is out of sympathy with the rest
of the region, why, when the best of motives the cities of north township moved to form a drainage district, they were called banditti, real estate
grafters, political rlngsters etc.
Gary's black belt murders are no
longer a problem. They are the log!
cal result of conditions as they exist
in Gary. This has been demonstrated by the evidence which has been brought out in the trial just closed. No further confirmation is needed.
What of a newspaper that keeps
quiet about these things because it gets a little pap.
A SIGN OF THE TIMES. The proposed general strike in lielgium calls to mind the industrial disturbances in Europe within the past two years. There occurred in Britain the great dock and rail strikes, labor troubles in France, in Italy, and in the capitol of Austria. There the labor clashes lead to bread riots and for the first time since 1846 Vienna had to be declared Under martial law. In our own country we have seen the I. W. V. effects, especially at Lawrence and at the present time in Dayton. The' I. W. W. has predicted that the time will come when there will be a national strike in some country, and if the strikers do net persuade the soldiery to lay down, they promise the bloodshed as in the French revolution. In Belgium it is the socialists demand more equable suffrage. But, in any event, it is a sign of the growth of radicalism and the tendency of masses to work in a unit in securing economic demands.
COLONEL Roosevelt at least ought to do something to prevent the Ananias Club from continuing in the decline it has entered upon.
IF Huerta really wants Zapata to come in and surrender, all he has to do is to assure him that nr automobile rides are contemplated.
WHY GARY MURDERS OCCUR. Gary has six or eight murders a year. Most of them are the products of conditions in the "patch." Yesterday a jury in the Lake superior court found Fred AUerton, a halfbreed, Indian and negro, guilty of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced him to the penitentiary for from two to fourteen years with the recommendation that he be compelled to serve only a minimum term of five years. The case developed these Interesting facts: Fred Allerton, a man of previous good character, was employed by a gambler who has fastened himself on the city of Gary, leechlike, during the entire administration of Thomas E. Knotts. It was AHerton's duty to look after the game. He was armed with a revolver which he was instructed to carry in a belt at his side for use In the event of trouble. There was an argument over the rake-off the house was to get. Trou-
WOOL on the free list probably will not have any effect upon the shearing industry in Wall street.
IT begins to look as though the new tariff measure, like that of 1894, will be the Wilson bill.
GRATEFUL TO YOUNG MORGAN. Since young J. Pierpont Morgan id
to take up the mantle of his late father in the world of finance, England is hoping that he." too, will suc
ceed the late Mr. Morgan in his effort to collect the great art treasures of the world and have them arranged for the benefit of the people who wish to see them. Of course London does not expect to see much of the younger Morgans in future, but it Is understood that they will not dispose of the palatial home of the later financier which has long been one of the sight3 of London. Of one thing the new head of the Morgan family can be assured and that is, that he will always find a cordial welcome among the English people who feel a lasting gratitude to his father for what he did for the development of art in this country.
SOMEHOW the story about the India'na farm hand who slew eight huge blacksnakes in deadly combat looks a little queer without the Laporte date line.

OIR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT. Washington. D. C, April 11. Had a long talk with Congressman Peterson today, but be refused to do anything for me. Guess you'll have to send railroad fare, lte expects to name the Gary port collector soon and I have a hunch who it will be. I suppose you've noticed that the tariff is to reduce the necessities of life? Great stuff! Always told you the democrats were O. K. They put on the free list hoop iron, cash registers, cod, seal and whale oil. Thank goodness. Now we eat again. HENNERY COLDBOTTLE.

"JUDGE GARY. It Is thought, will have plenary power in the Steel Corporation, now that J. P. Morgan ia gone." Examiner. Even If Elbert does attain plenary powers he won't forgive the hungry Gary Trib. for double crossing him when It came In sight of the public printing trough.
MAYOR of Laporte says he can't remember when he was first elected. Hope that he Isn't like the -mayor of Gary who doesn't want to remember because of the way he got there.

IT is well to reflect that if the
motorcycles did not kill and injure
so many of their riders there would be more motorcyclists.
THE new secretary of the navy
evidently doesn't care what happens
to the important sea warriors who have for years been saving the nation by desk work in Washington. He has
ordered some of them to go to sea regardless of the fact that it will probably make some of them sick. '
NOW is the time for young America to rise in revolt. Congress is contemplating a 50 per cent reduction of the tariff on castor oil.
A TERRIBLE INVENTION. The range of modern inventions seems to have about reached the limit as far as danger is concerned. A frightful addition has been made to the efficacy of the revolver by a French inventor. A small, but powerful electric light is attached to the mechanism of a pistol of ordinary size. By use of lenses and mirrors, the glare of the circle of lights which the lamp throws Is bright enough to be clearlv seen in riavifirhf orrotot
- u,aiuov so dark an object' as a light colored
suit of clothes. Now the centre of the circle of light, marked by a black
spot, by arrangement of the lenses.
is exactly the spot where the bullet will strike. Thus, all one has to do is to place the black centre of the blazing circle of light over tbe heart of an adversary and pull the trigger. At night the light is shockingly strong. Experiment with the new weapon show that perfect greenhorns, who have never used a revolver in their lives, can shoot far more accurately than experts using an ordinary pistol. Up to sixty yards one cannot miss a small bull's
eye, day or night, while extremely ac
curate shooting is possible up ta a hundred yards. Think of a bandit equipped with a weapon like this.
NO first-class constitutional monarchy can keep house without an occasional war scare to make the army and navy tax bills go down.
THE Indiana novelists have probably by now emerged from the six best cellars. ' .,
QUESTION IS TIMELY. A Wisconsin man has refused a $5,000 job at Washington because the pay isn't enough. Oh, sigh of anguish! A lot of patriots around here would be ready to serve their country and the payroll for $500 a year. Why are all of the big jobs offered to the fellows that don't want them?
justice of the United States supreme court says the New York World. The cubists and futurists, according to their way of thinking, are engaged in making this a better country for George W. Perkins' children, and they are entitled to Mr. Roosevelt's active sympathy. They stand at a cubist Armageddon battling for a cubist lord. They are the Osawatomie speech of art. The "Nude Descending a Staircase" is the perfect pictorial representation of a Roosevelt platform. How did the serpent of discord

ANDREW Carnegie isn't for peace all the time. He recently gave ' a testimonial for a brand of Scoti whisky. " '
AT last the real cause of the suffrage disturbance In England has been discovered. The men of London are wearing aigrettes in their hats.
KENTUCKY, at last, is taking water. But only under protest.
THIN HOSE AND LOW NECKS. As figured out by Ohio reformers, the cause of vice is not so much low wages as low necks not thin gruel, but thin hose. Denlson Herald.
ROOSEVELT BOLTS AGAIN. We regret to report that there is a split in the progressive party and that Mr. Roosevelt has bolted again. His formal repudiation in the Outlook of the cubists and futurists makes it more than doubtful that his bull moose party can ever be kept together. Although we agree with everything that Mr. Rooeevelt says about the cubist and futurist pictures as a "lunatic fringe," the fact remains that these views of art are identical with Mr. Roosevelt's views of government. The liberties that the cubists and futurists take with form and color and perspective aro Identical with the liberties that Mr. Roosevelt takes with courts and constitutions. When he dismisses their apologia with the contemptuous remark that "change may mean death, not life, and retrogression, not development." he joins the ranks of tbe reactionaries. His language la as
