WANT PETERSON ON COMMITTEE (Continued from Page !. resented Indiana on that committee but his defeat last fall has deprived this state of hepresentation there. It is not customary to appoint a new member of congress to such an important committeeship, but the effort will be made this time owing to the fact that Peterson is from the district which has more interest In the doing of the Rivers and Harbors committee, than any other district throughout the state. The request Is expected to have weight inasmuch as the board of engineers have recom mended large expenditures on the Indiana Harbor harbor by the govern ment and a goodly sum has actually been appropriated on these recommendation. The trio in charge of the petition are calling upon Judges, presidents of the banks throughout this district, managers of the local industries and the mayors of East Chicago. Over In Whiting William Vater seems to be gaining strength. There is a strong movement for him there and he is makln headway in East Chicago. The argument that the successor of Schaaf should be chosen from the locality In which he lived is being used j with effect. ----- -.- . So far as it Is known there are no ' new candidates in the field. In Ham mond George Eder is conceded to be a strong man, but he will not get out and make a fight for the appointment. His friends, however, are powerful and are making an Insistent canvass. XEWMA1V AND O'COSNELL HARD WORKKRS. William Newman is working hard for the appointment, but is meeting with some .opposition. From a party service point of view Newman is believed to deserve the office if It ' Is given to any Hamm&nd man, but business men everywhere are asking that this appointment be taken out of polltics. Tom OConneh of the Harbor is another of the men who has been a ceaseless worker for the party. With the date of- the appointment fixed for the next meeting of the commissioners there has been no movement started to have a business man of recognised ability, regardless of his po Were you born under a lucky star Oriental Astrology will tell you this and reveal many more events in your life that will help and Interest you. WILD EYED REPORTS ARE SCANDALOUS TCentlnned from Pag LV possible for these telegrams to get In or for any of the thousands of persons who started for Indiana to penetrate the flood zone. This, of course, added to the confusion and alarm. A Nice Little Mnnrkaaies. One newspaper reporter sent a Btory to his papers over the country that he himself had taken twenty-five dead bodies out of the water In this city and that hundreds more had been seen floating away. This was a lie of the worst kind. The total death toll in Indianapolis thus far, not counting rumors, but relying on actual known conditions, is one death. A boy Is known to have geen drowned last Tuesday night. . That la all that Is known to be dead. Why anyone should send out such reports Is past all human understanding. It was the work of the irresponsible and unreliable element in the newspaper business and not of the reliable kind. It was Impossible for several days to get any accurate information In this city from Fort Wayne. Peru, Logansport, Brookville, Kokomo, Lafayette and the other flood swept cities, and In the meantime all kinds of rumors crept in. One had 600 dead at Peru. Another report said 40 were dead at Brookville, Lafayette came to bat with a heavy death loss, according to rumor. Logan sport had auirered terribly and many people were killed according to an other report. And so it went. But when the truth actually came through it was found that the total death toll In the entire state would fall far short of 100. The property loss has not yet been estimated. One report about Peru was so alarming that the Governor ord ered a hundred coffins sent there at once. They were not needed. All state buisness at the state house has given way during the last week to flood relief work. Governor Ralston was Implored to declare martial law In Indianapolis. Peru, Logansport and some other places, and for a time he thought he would do so. In fact he had a proclamation written one day declaring martial law 'in Indianapolis in order to prevent threatened wholesale looting of flood damaged and deserted homes, but he found that the local authorities were fully able to handle the situation and the proclamation was not Issued. Offers of aid from all over the country have come to the Governor. Minnesota, Missouri, California,- Illinois. Wisconsin and other states, through their Governor, have offered financial and other assistance. Minnesota offered to ship a thousand military tents to help shelter the homeless. Many cities raised big relief funds and notified the Governor that they were at his disposal. But !t was decided that Indiana was able largely to take care of Itself, and little of this outside help, so generously offered, has been called for. Carload after carload of food and provisions have been shipped , into Indiana . from surrounding states nd cities. This has been distributed among the various flood stricken places for immediate relief of the distress caused by the floods, and much more of this kind of relief is said to be on the way. Indianapolis already has raised more than $60,000 for the relief of flood suff erers, and the fund, will go above $100,000 In the next two or three days. The Indianapolis News already has raised more than $18,000 of this sum. Several thousand dollars also has been received by the Governor for use throughout the state, and this is affording much relief. The fact is that Indiana came nobly to the relief of its own people. Adv. who was In this city Saturday, said that he had never in all his life seen such generosity among people as was displayed In this state at this time. He regarded it as wonderful, and said that he had never seen anything like it In the east. People went down In their pockets and dug up the cash. Rich and poor alike came to the front. Contributions have ranged all the way from one cent to XI 000. The state authorities are much concerned over the health conditions In Indiana which will follow the flood. They fear an outbreak of disease, especially of typhoid fever, and they will exert every posBlgle effort to require the flood cities to clean" up at once so as to prevent this as much as possible. This work, however, Is being left to the local authorities, and the state will not take it off 'their hands unless they find they are not able to cope with the situation. And back of the state the government has announced that it stands ready to take charge If the problem becomes too large for the state. but this. It Is believed, will not b necessary.
