SOX DEFEAT YUMA !H JT0RR1D HEAT Contest in Arizona Sand Is Farce, Score at Finish Being 9 to 0.

CLABBY H TRYING

HARD

TO GET

MATCH

Yuma. Aria.. April 1. The White Sox

cropped off here yesterday to get a bit of a workout on the return trip to Chicago and it was only 90 in the

shade. In order to perspire one needed only to walk across the street, and If haxy clouds hadn't appeared in the afternoon all the Chicago athletes might have shriveled up with the heat. However, they went through the form of a nine-inning game of ball against Turna's athletes and won It in ridiculous fashion, 9 to 0. The Tumi battery petered out toward the finish and Doc White and ' Red Kuhn had to help them out. The -outfielders would have been gone, too, had they been forced to chase balls to the fence through a foot of sand, but the Sox batters were kind after clinch

ing the victory and didn't try to poke

the ball past the Infield.

Denver promoters, disappointed by the refusal of Eddie McGoorty to make weight for Jimmy Clabby and the subsequent canceling of the match billed

for there April 10. have started negotiations with three promising middle-

weights, one of whom will take the

place of McQoorty April 25. Willie Lewis, who Is in England at present, is the man most desired by the Denver matchmaker, but should Lewis be unable to come back to America now, Ernie Zanders or Tim O'Netl may be given the date. John Robinson, manager of Battling Nelson, says that Denver has been billed from cellar to garret for the Mc-Goorty-Clabby affair and that the seat sale promised to run Into the thousands, when McGoorty became obstinate about the weight. Nelson's man-

arer thinks that Clabby will draw

GOPHERS WANT GAME.

The East Chicago Gophers through

their manager wish to state that they will be glad to schedule games with any 14-15 year old teams in this vicinity for Saturday, April 5. and after. They had an exceptionally good season last year, losing but one game, and they hope to duplicate this feat during the coming season. Thomas will twirl for the Gophers this season and is expected to do some fine stunts. O'Connell. the Gophers' little left fielder, will again be seen with the lineup even though he now resides in Hammond. The Gophers would like to hear from the Gary Midgets. Harbor Crescent Colts especially, as last year futile attempts were made to arrange games with these teams. Any one wishing to

WON BACK IN '51 America won the cup which Sir Thomas Lipton Is so anxious to lift in a race around the Isle of Wight on August 22. 1851. In 18S7 George L. Schuyler, sole survivor of the syndicate that owned America, deeded the cup to the New York Yacht club to be a perpetual challenge cup for friendly competition between foreign countries. Since then there have been twelve series of races for the trophy in American waters, and the challenger has always been defeated not only in the series but, with the exception of a single race In whlfh- the defender was disabled, in every race of each series. Columbia beat the Lipton Shamrock in 1899 and Shamrock II in 1901. The last series of races for the cup were sailed August 22, 25 and Sept. 8, 1903, Reliance beating Shamrock III. most

Marty Porklns, former manager of McGoorty, wired Denver promoters that .the Oshkosh boxer would not be able to appear. Forkins says, that EdEddie has decided to how his own row from now on and that his next match probably will be with the Milwaukee man. Gus Christie. This is the match billed for Fond du Lac April 10, and this Is the match that McGoorty is taking in preference to making 168 pounds

Because of the heavy financial losses for several years, the authorities are

said to be considering eliminating the ;

nouncement that there is to be no team next fall would be made at once. It Is thought St. Louis will agree to cancel the contest, and if this is Lone there will be no regular gridiron sport at the local Institution.
