PUBLIC IS GIVEN TIMELY WARNING

City Engineer Points Out Dangers Attendant on High Water.

"Boil the water" is the timly warning that comes from the office of City Engineer Peter Lyons. While not preumins to speak with the authority of the 'health board, the city engineer points out the possibilities of typhoid epidemic, as his office had to take cognizance of the unusual rising the

Grand Calumet river and the Indiana Harbor canal. Tire high water has developed a strong current in the river and canal, so strong that the old muck and filth In the former Is being stirred up and carried out into the lake, where. Jt gets back into the water intake. "'The danger is not apparent now." said the city engineer, '"because It will take some time for the sewage in the Grand Calumet river to be flooded out into the lake and back into our water Intakes. The current is stirring up the murky bottom, and we all know what that means when we remember that nearly all the city's sewage Is drained into the stream. The Times will confer a real favor upon the people of Hammond in pointing out to them the necessity of boiling the drinking water at this time."

Little Calumet Subsiding. AU danger from floods as a result of the Little Calumet river is pas. The, river has eceded abou a foot. The water never was alarmingly high and reports from Gary that conditions were serious are ridiculous. This is the report that is received from" Black Oak this afternoon.

Mrs David Ball of Lewis street has four sisters, two brothers and her mother resldng in Lafayette. They reside on North Eighteenth street and she ia greatly concerned about their safety.
