EVANS DESCRIBES THE ' GOLF LINKS AT
Flourishing Club, Only One Year Old, Has 275 Enthusiastic Members and Fine Club House.
HAMMOND
By Charles ("Chick") Evana. There is a splendid little golf course at Hammond, Ind. ' It Is new brandnew and the players are filled with the genuine enthusiasm that usually "marks the novice. In most things, however, when the newness wears oft a bit the1 enthusiasm wanes, but not so with golf. In that best of sports the player's enthusiasm, as a rule, increases with every game he plays. A large proportion of the Hammond population has played golf this whole winter In fact, I have never seen so . many red balls as at that club. So it
A beautiful clubhouse was built last spring. The club is only about one
year old and there is a membership of about 275. most of whom olay golf

One of the big advantages of the club is its accessibility. It can be

and it was not until last Sunday that Glen Johnson and I were able to go. We were met at the station by Harry Johnson, brother of Glen Johnson, and went at once to the golf grounds. It was a cold day, but golfers did not propose to let so trivial a thing as
the weather interfere with a golf i game. I played nine holes. It was j

prevent the matches, owing to the opposition of the local clergy. The fights were staged here because of the In
ability to put them on at Green Bay, five Tnlles distant, and the authorities
regard the local fights as being an
evasion of the Green Bay authorities,
as the entire attendance Is made up of Green Bay people. The fights slated for last night were stopped by the
sheriff after 300 persons had gathered.
ABEATTELL
COMES BACK New York, March 20. Abe Attell
"came back" last night and stopped
Ollle Kirk of St. Louis in the third
round of their scheduled ten-round bout at the Forty-fourth street club.
The former champion had the better of the going all the way. He began
by fighting close and using both hands. Toward the last he got in his famous old left hook with telling effect.
It was one of those, followed by two
quick rights to the jaw, that put Kirk
down for the count of eight. Kirk
rose slowly and was helpless and the referee stopped the bout to save Kirk from further punishment. The men weighed in at 128 pounds ringside. Both failed to move the beam. Louisiana, the much-touted protege of Attell, had
Frank Connifrey on the run all through their ten-round go.

CHANCE PLAYS
FIRST; YANKEES ARE BEATEN
Hamilton. Bermuda, March 20. The Yankee regulars, led by Manager Chance, were beaten yesterday by Jersey City In a nine-Inning battla by a score of 4 to 0. This Is the first game in which Chance has taken part. Ford pitched the first four innings for New York and Jack Warhop worked the last five frames. Mains and Doescher pitched for Skeeters. Midkiff at short for the Yankees continued his brilliant fielding. The Yankees owed their defeat to their poor judgment in solving the deliveries of their opponents. The Yanks made five hits with two errors and Jersey City got eight hits and no errors.
LEACH TO JUMP TO FEDERAL LEAGUE
Pittsburg,' March 20. Tommy Leach will manage the St. Louis team of the new Federal league, the information coming from a reliable source. The former Pittsburg star outfielder is said to be dissatisfied with his berth in Chicago and will leave organized baseball. The offer made to the midget was far better than the salary he Is receiving at Chicago.

MUSEUM FOR
SPORT TROPHIES New "York, March 20. A museum of trophies and pictures which, will cover the history of many branches of amateur sport in America Is to be opened soon at the New Tork Athletic club, according to an announcement made today.. A suitable room for assembling
all of the "fruits of victory" which old time athletes are willing to place on exhibition Is being prepared and the exhibits are to be properly classified
and explained. The pictures and trophies will date back nearly a century, beginning with the announcement of the opening of the New Tork gymnasium on Ann street in 1832. The first trophy thus far obtained is a pair of skates awarded to George D. Phillips in a mile race on the site of the old Windsor hotel in 1867. With this is a medal for the American figure
skating championship which Phillips
won In 1897, thus showing a competitive life of one of the present members of the club of exactly thirty years.
