In the gyring1 the housewife's fancy lightly tunu toward vacuum cleaner, lippiog p carpets, taking down all dap cries and making the home generally a place to dodge until the scouring ie over with. Therefore, while this paroxysm is on tfce retail stores bring out their choicest wares in these particular lines. No garden spot in the city is more thoroughly in tone with spring than are the upholstery, drapery and 'carpet departments this season. For six months they hare been stocking up, preparing for the occasion, and new burst out in full bloom, advertising merchandise gathered from all parts f the country, and indeed from all parts of the world, in a manner to convince any housekeeper that she may have a tastefully furnished home during the spring and summer at a remarkably small expense. Perhaos this is the reason that more and more the homes during the summer have ceased to be barns and are really well-furnished homes.

The old idea that the minute the first sign of spring appeared it was necessary to rip out everything that had the least suggestion of house furnishing and to live in a house consisting of four walls and a chair or two, said chairs carefully draped in prison striped coverings, has gone out of fashion. 1 Today homes are far brighter in appearance with the light, modern draperies than the old undraped homes. Of particular interest this season are the cretonnes, ranging in price, from as low as 15 cents and 17 cents up to 75 cents and even $1. During the height of the quadri-an-nual spasm, known as Presidential Election, there were some very amusing alleged facts brought to light in regard to this line of fabrics. It was said that foreign scrims and cretonnes could be bought for 12 cents and 15 cents, equal in quality to American made goods at 5 cents to even 10 cents a yard higher. All who have seen the foreign scrims and cretonnes at the stated prices are unanimous in declaring that if they were

obliged to use them that they might possibly decorate a barn or cow stable with them. It is universally recognized that nowhere can the same wonderful range of artistic patterns be found as in the American made merchandise. Of course, there are some beautiful foreign goods to be had when you get into the hand blocked prices, ' but there you are reaching figures even ten times the prices quoted above. Of course these printed materials are confined very much to the bed-rooms, or perhaps we might say to the upstairs f the house. For the more dignified rooms there is rapidly coming in a vast assortment of lightweight, yarn dyed materials. These are usually used in connection with either lace curtains or plain or fancy window scrims. - A few years ago these lightweight materials were out of the question because of the ravages made by the sun upon the dyes, but for several years manufacturers have constantly been im

proving on the dyestuffs used and today there is a vast range of these lightweight materials which resist the action of the sun to a really remarkable extent. It is a well known fact that the sun shining through the glass not only has a tendency to fade a fabric but has, in a modified form, the effect of a burning glass. Yet the lightweight, modern upholstery fabrics withstand this double action for many months. Styles in curtains move more slowly than styles in clothing, but none the less surely. At the present time we like our curtains short, a great majority of people preferring not to have them run over an inch or so below the window sill. Then, Valances, like skirts, must be tight-fitting. We must have them perfectly smooth and flat. They may be gathered or box pleated, , but the whole general effect must be flat and close to the hangings. , The display of carpets in the retail stores these days would make the average Oriental green with envy., Noth

ing seems to be beyond the carpet makers' art and in their displays at reasonable prices the housewife finds designs, patterns and colorings which will harmonize with any scheme of decoration she may desire. Once upon a time, carpet was carpet whether it was winter or summer. t Now there are a half dozen splendid variations to be had for cooling effects during the hot season. A rug that has constantly been growing in popularity in the better grade, is known as a Gobelin fabric from its close resemblance to the Gobelin tapestry, including the raised or embossed effect of the figures. These rugs have no pile and are therefore much cooler in appearance than the pile fabrics. Moreover, the wonderful range of colorings, including pastel effects, are to be found in very few fabrics. It is also possible to have this style rug made up in colorings to match wall paper. Therefore, it lends itself very well to decorative schemes.

Grass rugs, which have been for some years popular on porches, etc., are now taking a step up into the bed-room. The one objection to the rug in the past has been that the grass was rather harsh to the tread, but improvements in the weave have been made during the past season, using the finer but closer warp, that have eliminated this objection and undoubtedly the grass rug will be used more largely during the coming season than ever before. While we are speaking of bed-rooms ' and porches, it is impossible to overlook the growing popularity of wicker furniture. A few years ago the stores carried a little of this with fear and trembling, but today wicker furniture is a staple in the upholstery department. Have you noticed the advance made in linoleum in the past two or three years? There is hardly any sort of pattern that cannot be had in this material. There are, of course, the old, conventional designs. In addition there

are parquet floor designs, tile designs, even Oriental rug designs and good ones, too. . , These things merely indicate the increased use of linoleum. It has been found sanitary and has the housewife's O. K. on that score. It has been found to be warm in winter and cool in summer and its use. has long ago outgrown the kitchen and bath-room. Taken all in all, the stores from the housekeeping point of view are yearly becoming more interesting. A good many departments axe not only displaying the merchandise, but are displaying it in such a way that the housekeeper has an opportunity to see how it would actually look in her home. They are making window drapes of their materials. They are grouping, furniture, rugs and upholstery into lft
