He clouted one about a mile in the first inning, demonstrating how hard it is to recover from an old habit.

at lesat the Sox are champions of this part of the civilized world, for yes-' terday they defeated the Oakland team, which won the Pacific Coast league title last year. The score was 9 to 3. and the winning majority of six runs was the result of one inning's vicious clouting and some sour fielding on the part of the Oaks. Next to the result, the thing that pleased Manager Callahan most was the showing of Blitzen Benz, the
Batesvllle butcher. "Joe and his meat ball deceived the coast champions for SIblITH NAMED TO
five Innings to such an extent that they had gathered only one hit and even 'less runs. The Oaks really deserved another swat oft Joe, but Babe Borton took one away from Mr. Gardner in the fourth round with a gloved hand stab that aroused the deep anger of the victim. Kid - Smith, the ' southern league youth, worked the last four innings, and was found for four blows and three runs. One of the tallies might have been averted if Cap Lord hadn't . committed a wild throw. Smlthie's exhibition was fairly satisfactory to CaL who was well aware of the fact that it was really the lad's first appearance with a big league club.
