Their fight in the interests of this location was the most notable thing in the efforts to locate the plant soma where in Indiana. The industrial agent for the Nlew York Central lines made a frantic effort to locate the plant along tethe Michigan Central tracks north west of Calumet park and southwest Of Hegewisch. He failed utterly The' adbnts for the deal were Clark and Tralher of Chicago. The deal is j said to hjave involved close to $75,000 i the land alone. The western plant this company Is to be the largest , in the wdrld. It will be one of several which are already in Operation. TIMES IS FIRST. That T: is Times has been close to the situation is shown frofn the fact that it promised an exclusive story on the actual location of the plant. Already the United States Steel Cor poration has invested $2,000,000 In foundations for their plant, and sub sidiary companies have invested heavily in the district, following the steel corporation's lead. . The Wisconsin Car company Intends to put in a $2,000,000 plant and the American Steel and Wire company is to have a $10,000,000 plant. Other Companies Coming. Members at the conference received a dispatch that the St. Paul car companies, were to invest in a $2,000,800 plant. Other companies to have mills are the Standard Oil. Portland Cement and the American Locomotive company. J. J. 0'Connor( president of the land company; G. R. Carlock, vice president and general sales manager; H. M. Hokenson, secretary and treasurer, and A. F. Doyle, manager of the Chicago branch of the land company, were present at the $3j000,000 transaction. Jamea Andrew Moffett, vice president of the Standard Oil company of New Jersey, died here yesterday after a brief Illness. He left a widow, a daughter and two sons. The family had been spending the winter here. Mr. Moffett wal born in Pocahontaa county, Virginia, In April, 1851. He left school at the age of 16 and worked on farm for 'three years. Then he entered the employ of the1 Standard OJ1 company of New Jer-. sey. "' Mr.. Moffett started aa a clerk In the refinery at Parkersburg, W. Va... where he was employed for' Beveral years. He later; had charge "of a small plant and then of the refinery at Whiting. Ind., being elected a- vice president of tha Standard Oil company' of the state. Then he moved to Chicago, where he remained for. several -years. , He married in 1883. -' - , When he was 49 years old he wa called to New York. He was first made" president of the Standard Oil company of Indiana and later took the vice presidency of the Standard 0l company of New Jersey after the death of a E Rogers.
