of slag, county roads have many of them been built without slag as a foundation, stone alone being used in their construction. Now that the price of stone has gone up to meet that of slag, another way out of the difficulty seems Imperative. The Inland mill seemed the logical way out of the difficulty. The Inland people are not un
der contract to anybody, trust or otherwise, to take their slag oft their hands, and would be free therefore to enter into a contract with the county to supply slag in such .quantities as necessary-to build roads in Lake county. It is possible to build roads entirely of
slag, and good roads at that, using the heavier stuff as a foundation, and the fine screenings for the top dressing. If this plan were adopted it might bring both the stone and slag trust to
terms, or they would have to seek elsewhere than in Lake county for a market for their product.

unanimously agreed that the conditions were ripe in this state for the occurrence of a most serious disaster due to the lack of precaution being applied In the theaters and public gathering places of the state when entertainments" are held, one Immediately following the other, and the patrons waiting for the time of the next show are permitted to crowd the approach to the exits on the outside, and the building crowded to the fullest capacity on the inside and lacking in the proper
emergency exits and the necessary safeguards to prevent the possibility of a fire or panic. "We trust that the public and the members of the legislature in particular will see that a law is provided at this session that will provide for the proper safeguarding of the lives of our people, or If failing In this that they will assume the responsibility In the event the delay proves disastrous. The situation is a grave one as at present we have no law on the statute books regulating such conditions."

back to a depth of one hundred and fifty feet. This would seem to be the most logical point for the city of Hammond to acquire dockage, being a most advantageous location. It will be open to navigation in 1914 for any kind of lake vessel as the west branch of the canal will positively be finished this year. With the canal from the west branch to the lake already completed, this will open up the Calumet region to
lake traffic, from the lake to Calumet avenue, in the spring of 1914. K., J. Jt K. Bridge Nearly Finished. The Great Lakes Dredge and Dock company will begin dredging in two weeks. Also the same concern will
commence the construction of docks at the forks and around the E.. J. & E. property to protect the new bridge. The bridge Is almost completed and will be entirely finished within a few days, all that, now remains to render it corn, plete being the finishing touches to the electrical equipment, etc. The material for the dockage Is being received now. The new map also, shows a cut-oft at the southwest corner of the forks. The Junction here is equal in size to the turning basin and it may be used as such by the Standard Oil company, whose dockage is directly across the west branch of the canal from" this point. The Standard Oil people have been using temporary- dockage on the
other side of the E., J. & E. bridge, because the bridge was not complete. In the meantime the company has been busy building its permanent docks to be in readiness for use as soon as the E., J. & E. bridge would be finished. The new docks are entirely finished and will be used this year. Shows Harbor Improvement. The Great Lakes Dredge and Dock company's dock building equipment is now on the north side of the E.,J. & E. bridge and as soon as this is completed will be brought through onto the other side to start work on the dockage at the forks as well as that for the E., J. & E. Another feature of the new map Is the location of the proposed breakwaters at Indiana Harbor and the location of the Harbor piers as they are to be rebuilt. The fill by the Inland Steel company for the new coke ovens is alsq, shown, as are all the factory sites sold up to date, the new street car lines and those proposed to be built.' - ' v -
