'mistakes' or "misstatements" of
some other newspaper.
This would be contrary to the ethics
of journalism, besides being an im
pertinence.
Any newspaper has errors enough
of ils own to rectify without under
taking tfie extraneous and unpleasant task of correcting its contemporaries. As we should prefer those who
have grievances, real or fancied, to bring their cases to court here, instead of taking them elsewhere, so we assume that other newspapers prefer to receive complaints or criticism direct. Again, their readers have seen their errors; ours have not. It would be absurd to lay before our readers the error in order to explain its
refutation. Any person who thinks ho finds a misquotation or misrepresentation in newspaper columns may be sure of an audience with the editor responsible for publication. Shoud amends be refused- then and not till then is it time to take the matter to a contemporary.
The greatest error is that of the reader who thinks that every newspaper will refuse to correct itself or will welcome the chance to impeach others.

ance. The man elected to it is clothed with real dignity, and should bej respected accordingly. He should, of course, respect his office and himself, as, unquestionably, Mr. Marshall will. It would not be consistent with this respect for the Vice President to attend meetings of the Cabinet in which he has no legal right, no duties to perform, no responsibilities, and not the shadow of effective power. The
plea that he would in this way keep himself informed of the course of affairs in the Government is particularly weak. The Nation i3 accustomed to have a newly-elected President take on himself the work of his office with no special information or training save what he may have acquired
in other public service. Sitting in the Cabinet room and listening to its legitimate occupants would be of little value, and , would be to the last
degree tedious, disagreeable, and in
congruous with the real duties of the
Vice Presidential office. Mr. Bryan, were he in a position to accept such

ADVERTISING AND HUMAN LIVES.
The Chicago City Railway com

of safety for passengers. It is a good i
idea and a fine way of reaching the people.
Every dollar that the traction com
pany spends in advertising of this kind will save it tea in damage suits and settlements. It will also tend to
conserve life and limb and what's more it stamps this corporation as a
progressive and humane one.

THE INTREPID SCOTT.
The deeds of four explorers have stirred the world during the past two years Peary, Cook, Amudsen and Scott. Scott the brave and dauntess Englishman has lost his life after reach- ' ing a goal where another had visited

A FANCIFUL SUGGESTION. Mr. Marhsull is inclined to take with formal politeness the suggestion of Mr. Bryan that the Vice President should be invited to a seat at the Cabinate table and allowed to listen to whatever discussion goes on in the presumably serious company there as
sembled. We venture to think, however, that the Invitation will not be

ON ETHICS OF JOURNALISM.
(This editorial was taken from the
Chicago American. THE TIMES sug
gests that a certain Gary paper con-
Eider the advice it offers.) Frequently correspondents im
risk of it, manage to induce the Presi
dent to withhold it.
Mr. Marshall is a' very good, con
stitutional lawyer. He has a genuine respect for the prescriptions and the
limitations of the Constitution, and
for the principle that an office under
it should confine himself to the clear
duties and functions of his office. The
Constitution contains two, and only two, provisions as to the duties of the Vice President. One is that he "shall "be President of the Senate, but shall "have no vote unless they be equally
"divided." The other is that "in case "of the removal of the President from
"office, or of his death, resignation, or
"inability to discharge the powers and
"duties of the said office, the same
"shall devolve on the Vice President."
It is obvious that the duties of the

For hundreds of years the spring rains have inundated the valley of the Little Calumet river and on account of the narrow channel at a
point southeast of Hammond the water backs up and not only destroys
crops but washes out roads and other
improvements.
Owing to the fortunate fact that the headwaters of the Little Calumet river are close to the shore of Lake Michigan and the entire course of the river is practically parallel to the shores of the lake and only ten to fifeen miles distant from it engineers have declared that it is feasible to build a ditch that will take away the flood waters and prevent the annual destruction of property. EXALTED PLAINNESS. We have to admire that lack of ostentation in Mr. Marshall which causes him to admit that he cannot afford to maintain a house in Dupont circle or some other fashionable
Washington thoroughfare because he hasn't the means and his salary of
$12,000 will admit of no lavish dis
plays. Both Mr. Wilson and Mr, Marshall are poor men.
Of late years there has been too much of a tendency at Washington
to ape the courts of Europe. Thl3 became especially pronounced during
the Roosevelt seven years.
, Mr. Marshall's frank statement of his position lends dignity to his office and once more calls to mind that the highest offices in', the gift of the
American people are yet open to the poor mix . - After all we think Mr. Marshall will find all the pomp and luxury he wants at the Shoreham.

RUSSIA CHANGING. After passing the Duma, a bill ad
