Mrs. Patterson, who was 84 years old.

died Monday night of general break-

Mrs. Patterson received a telegram on Tuesday .morning and wired to l.er

for Coal City. The funeral will take place today and will be attended by all of the children of the deceased.

plant, Calumet, About 100 laborers are

Involved. An increase in wages Is de

manded..

When the men were going to work

this morning at about 7:30 o'clock, a number ' of pickets, stationed' outside the fence, sought to prevent them from entertaing. They pulled them back and

talked with , them, telling them to "take a stand for their right" The police were summoned. Sergeant -Mike Gorman going to the plant " in charge of a squad, of officers, and three men who seemed to be leaders In the affair, were arrested. They were 16ckd up in the East Chicago jail to await trial before Judge Walter J. Riley, The officials of the company expressed their willingness to treat with the men, and even promised them an advance in wages to take effect Feb. 1. But the men seemed determined to take a day off, and refused to consider the company's offer. -.-..' The laborers on strike have been receiving 18 cents an hour and demand 21 cents. ' - "
