cities of the Calumet region would flow from the financial renters of Europe and America if some of the methods of the German land banks should be adopted in Indiana. When Frederick the Great after the ruin of his wars, permitted the nobles of Silesia to form a landschaft, a method was adopted which caused a flow of money from the hoards of Kurope, to the ruined estates where the needs were so great. The devices uped gave perfect safety to the lender combined with a low interest rate for the borrower. From that day to the present, the bonds of the Landschaften have ranked among the most gilt-edged of securities and enormous sums are loaned through this agency. The Silesian Institution holds mortgages of more than 300,000,000 marks and there are many other giants. Davldaoa Will Talk on Subject. Mr. Henry S. Davidson, the secretary of the Whiting Savings- and Loan Association will make an address on the subject of the German land banks before the convention of Building Loan men at . Indianapolis on February 5. Mr. Davidson is enthusiastic in the belief that some of the vital features of these institutions are entirely applicable to American conditions and the claims and facts presented above are given on his authority. ' Mr. Davidson thinks that the Indiana legislature should permit the establishment of societies aproaohing the SfirSlT type. Is ""aT'frta.sre of relief both to the farmer and to the rapidly developing cities.

SMALLPOX SCARE REVIVES ISOLATION HOSPITAL TALK Continued from Pare D

maintained by a city or, several cities. "With the whole county supporting an isolation hospital it could be maintained In a proper manner," said Dr. Weis. "It is something that we need in this county, for there is no telling when an epidemic may break out. That

by the way brings up the subject of a possible epidemic right at this time. ;

There is smallpox in South Chicago, two cases are reported from the north end of the county, and a suspected case is reported from Scherervllle. I know nothing authoritatively of the latter, but the situation reminds one very forcibly that there is danger at the door. The point I want to make is that not enough of our people are vaccinated. I should say that only about twenty per cent of our population is immune. There Is no excuse for smallpox as long as it is preventable. It was suggested to Dr. Weis that an isolation hospital might also have the additional feature of being a hospital for delirium tremens patients at times when no patients with contagious diseases were enrolled there. Dr. Weis said that the idea was well worth considering, as it Is a known fact that "D. T." patients sometimes die in jails because they are unable to receive all the care that such a camands. Place Xeerfe for "TO, T-n." There is little provision made for a victim of alcoholism. If he is able to walk he is sent to the county jail, if not, he is kept in the first Jail into which he has been thrown and there medical aid is given him. But no Lake county jail has ever been mistaken for a hospital. Like in the case of contagious diseases the regular hospitals do not enjoy admitting a raving drunkard, and inasmuch as these unfortun

ates are entitled to attention, it Is just I

only just to think of making some provision for them.

Martin Sextonius, a slight-of-hand

performer out of a job, came to Indi

ana Harbor from Chicago yesterday, and after indulging in a few potations from the cup that inebriates, he had a bright idea. He would have eome fun with the foreigners. He accordingly started on a round of the saloons with an egg up each sleeve. He went into a saloon in the foreign district and began to pluck eggs out of the atmosphere, placing them in his pockets as he grabbed them off. He Insinuated himself behind the bar and offered to reap a harvest of eggs from the bartender, Jim Sobrluskl. If he could not find twenty egtrs about his person he was willing to buy the drinks. If he found the specified twenty, the nn was to buy. , ' One egg was extracted frofti the bartender's collar, a half a dozen from his sleeve, more from his trousers pocket and still others from his shoes. After the crowd had counted twenty, the house bought. Two or three who were feeling pretty good then thought to continue the sport and also bought, the prestidigitateur realizing on each round. Instead, however, of increasing the merriment, the freedom with which the liquor flowed had the effect of breaking it up. One man insisted that the stranger had the "evil eye" and should be put out. A .quarrel ensued in which the original two eggs were broken, one of them in the face of the discoverer of the evil eye. Sobt-iuski, scenting trouble with the police, ordered the crowd, who were raising the disturbance out, and with the aid of a few who sided with the bartender this was accomplished, Sex

tonius being among those ousted.
