ARTHTUR MlllTINGTOtl fillTCHELUS IN BAD Man With High Sounding Name Self Confessed Sneak Thief. It seems almost incredible that a man bearing the aristocratic name of Arthur Huntington Mitchell should be arrested as a sneak thief and much harder to believe that on being frisked the stolen property should be found on his person and part of it concealed in his sock at that. But such is undoubtedly the case. Yesterday Mr. Cook who boards at the Joyce hotel. East Chicago, notified Sergeant Welfenbach that $16.51 had been taken from his room In the hotel and gave him the description of a man whom he had seen hanging about the ' pace and whom he suspected of having committed the theft. The sergeant at once called up Officer John Lazaar who was looking after the crossing at Forsythe and Chicago avenues and repeating the description instructed the. officer to be on the lookout and bring the man in If he could locate him. . Soon after receiving his orders Officer Laxaar spotted his man and took him to the station. The prisoner vehementy protested his innocence, gave his name In full and as further evidence that he couldn't possibly be guilty announced that he. was formerly on the police force in Springfield, 111. When Sergeant Welfenbach heard the last statement he immediately ordered him searched. A five dollar bill, a Columbian half dollar, which Mr. Cook at once identified and a penny were brought to light, but the ten dollar gold piece which the loser stated was Included In the loot failed to show up. The sergeant then ordered the man to remove him shoes and stockings. Arthur Huntington Mitchell stood appalled that such an' indignity should be heaped on one of his name and an ex-policeman besides. But the officer was obdurate and he was compelled to obey. The first foot uncovered, disclosed not even the natural color of Arthur Huntington's skin, but when he removed the second sock out rolled a bright ten dollar gold piece. Then the man admitted that the jig was tip. TJe confessed having spent the other dollar. Judge Riley will hear the cast today. Woman r is interested and should know asout the wonderful MARVEL.
