Whe taken to task about the matter by Dr. Herskovitz, Dr. Doolittle sa4 that he had mailed a notice of the case to Dr. Herskovitz two days before. The notice, however, never reached Dr. Herskovitz. It Is feared that there Is another case of diphtheria in the vicinity of the houses In which the smallpox and scarlet fever patients are being cared for. Dr. Herskovitz has, however, not found this case, if indeed there be one, but is still investigating the matter. As many of the school children in East Chicago have never been vaccinated, Dr. Herskovitz is looking up the law on the matter and will get In touch with the board of education in an effort to see that no unnecessary risks are run. Unless the utmost care and precautions are taken in the various cities of the Calumet region epidemics of contagious diseases may break out at any time in any or all of the cities. The foreign section of South Chicago just at present has a smallpox scare, and nine new cases are said to have been discovered yesterday. In South Chicago nearly all the contagious came thus far have been found between Eighty-third and One Hundred and Tenth streets, and most of them are in the families of foreign torn employes of the steel mills.
