ARRESTED
Chief of Police Leo McCormack docs
not agree with Mayor Harrison of Chi
cago that all the bad men of the surrounding territory seek refuge in the
big town. - He knowa of three who
showed their bad judgment by stopping
at East Chicago with the result that
they were behind the bars an hour
after the police department received
word that they were supposed to be
in town. j
Shortly after noon yesterday. Chief
McCormack received a telegram from
Chief of Police Coit of Danville, 111.
stating that three men Charles Malovics, Adam Martin and John Tof schouskls, wanted in Danville, were
supposed to have headed for East Chi
cago and would be found In the saloon
of John Baryda.
A description of the men and their
numerous aliases was also Included In the message. Investigation however
failed to discover anyone by the name of Baryda running a saloon here, but the Chief did find that a man by that
name tended bar for Peter Carina kl who place of business is located at
Kennedy avenue and 151st street. He went out there about 1 o'clocK and on entering Immediately recojgnized one
oi me men ne iouna in tne salon as Charles Maloyich. The other two were
not so easily distinguished, so in orde
t be on the safe side, he placed
everybody he found there, five In all
under arrest. The chief then ordered
P.aryda to telephone for the patrol, bu the bartender refused, and the eltua tion was becoming just a trifle em barrasslng for the officer, as he didn"
dare leave his prisoners whom he had
line up, to use the phone for fear they would make a break to get away. The

turned over to Policeman Matt Brown
She was not arrested. It was evident
that she was poverty-stricken, and

and a place to sleep. Today she sits and reads magazines, hoping that the
city will play a part In her relief,
According to the story told by Liz
zie Mitchell, she has a brother, uavld

miles out of Mansfield, on a little place which he owns. He is poor, as the
place affords nothing more than a roo
to cover his head. To get a living he
works on the railroad. Ihe Drptner
has a family to support
The woman thought that she could
better her condition with her sister at Whiting, who makes her living at the washtub. So she started out, but without funds. She was sent from city to city through charity. At Plymouth she was given passage to this place by a township trustee. She asserts that she arrived here at 3 o'clock, and remained in the station until Officer Jones took her In charge. -Valpo Messenger.
