Johnson was not at home when the deputy sheriffs reached the Wabash avenue house. Apparently no one else was at home, either, but the officials went around to the rear and forced their way Into the kitchen, where they were confronted by five negro men and tour women. son, confronted the deputies. "Well, ,

CROWDS WATCH CROSS TRAIN FOR RIVERS New Tork, Jan. More than 100 boxing enthusiasts Journeyed to the new Polo A. C. in Harlem today to see Leach Cross go through his daily training for his match with Joe Rivers at the Empire A. C. Tuesday night. Cross Is ready to step into the ring at a moment's notice. He weighed 134 pounds this afternoon and declared he felt
strong. He has to train oft one more pound, but says that is easy.
If Croqs does one-half as well when
he enters the arena on Tuesday night as he did with his sparring partners Rivers will have his hands full. Cross looked like a champion. He was fast on his feet, started his punches quick
ly and shot them through every opening with unerring accuracy.
If Rivers Is at all concerned about
the coming contest he is the only one
aware of the fact. A spectator asked him what he thought of the coming contest and Joe said:
"Well, they say Cross is good. Be
lieve me he will have to be."

Accompanied by Manager Billy McCarney and "Young Al Kaufman," Heavyweight Champion Pugilist Luther McCarty boarded an observation car on the Salt Lake route at 10:30 yesterday morning and began a three months' tour of the country to give the hero worshiping populace a chance to gaze upon the comely features of the best heavyweight out of captivity. A crowd of 300 admirers' were at the station to bid the big fellow good-by and good luck. Before McCarty returns to Los Angeles he will probably have had a couple of fights on his hands. He makes his initial bow to the Denver sports next Monday night In his first experience before . the footlights. York veteran winning 400 to 215 a
Mussey's rooms Thursday night.
Slosson now has a total of 1,600
points to 1.197 for the little man from
Tokio and Is 403 points In the lead. The veteran averaged a trifle less than on
the preceding night, nothing 21. 1-19
with righ runs of 66 and 66, Yamada averaging 11 17-18, with high runs of
69 and 41.
Slosson scored more consistently than
in the thlr dblock, getting six double
figure counts in a row. At times .he
charmed" the ivories, his best display
coming in the seventeenth inning, when he counted sixty-six points- in
nine minutes. In this run he gathered the balls along the top rail, and for fifty points made only one drive, to the bottom end. At his fifty-eighth count he made another drive and four shots later he spread the balls for the 'first
time in the -run. . . ;
