An attempt to introduce the Illinois

was finally agreed upon. An effort was fnade to put this through the 1911 leg

to county fairs to a maximum amount of 1 cent on each $100 of taxables in

Since the Twin Cities received their new auto fire engine and their auto patrols, they have taken on metropolitan airs heretofore undreamed of. In the old days there was one chief and

one assistant chief in the fire depart

ment. The rest were Just men. Now

there are to be added captains and lieutenants whereby the force is to be

increased both numerically and in point

of dignity. Secondly, $6,000 is to be ex

pended in remodeling the East Chicago

fire station.

The city council Monday night suspended the rules and passed an or

dinance providing for the creation o

two captains, two lieutenants, two

chauffeurs and one mechanician. In order to fill all these positions It will

be necessary to make a corresponding number of additions to the department and the ordinance provides for these

additional men. The captains will re

celve $95 a month, the lieutenants $S5,

the chauffeurs $90 and the mechanician

$100. The latter will have charge, no

only of the new fire engine, but of the

two auto patrols, besides other duties.

Another ordinance providing for th

appointment for four chauffeurs and

two assistants on the police force, the

former at $90 and the latter at $85

month, was Also adopted on suspension

Evansville, Ind.. Jan. 8. An audi

ence of 1,31)9 people, taxing the capacity of Evans hall, voted unanimous In-

orsement yesterday afternoon of a re

port approving the order of Prosecutor

W. Sappenfield closing immoral re

sorts by March 1. Several ministers discussed the order. The Rev. . J. M.

Oaiser advocated a city ordinance mak

ing It the duty of the police to paint over every resort front door in letters a foot high the name of the owner of

the real este.

The prosecutor, packed by the power

of the circuit court .over which presides a new judge. Duncan C. Glvens, a democrat, is at war with the police over closing the resorts. The prosecu

tor has Issued an ultimatum to resort

keepers, serving notice that houses found in operation March 1 will be

raided.

The order by the prosecutor has been

received with contempt by Chief of Police Covey, who says he is not in sym

pathy with the movement to drive the women Into the streets. The chief says

the city police will take no hand in the

crusade.
