small ones approved by the board as

damages for the railroad companies

Where the E., J. & E. asks $50,000, the Griffith town board thinks $50 will be about right. The' other railroad com

panies which threaten suits are put off

with awards of $25 each.

The E., J. & E. was given the edge

on account of the proposed boulevard

contemplating the crossing of the com

pany's property at a point whero the latter has yards, as well as Its main

line.

The proposed highway, which will be

a boon to automobilists, is thus de

scribed by one familiar ith the situation: "When this street is put through

it will be the beginning of an im

portant county highway which, when

completed, will extend from Lake Mich

igan at Indiana Harbor, straight south

to Cedar Lake, As it Is now proposed

it will be 80 feet wide, with the best

an interurban line being built alwg UUijilil JkUllJJO Ufl

its entire length. This connecting with

an extension of the OaryCrown Point

to Cedar Lake, would make one of the

most important electric lines In the

county. '

The town board deserves much cred

it for the far-sighted manner in which

they have handled this question, al

though it 1s only one of several pro

gressive moves they have made while

they have had control cf affairs, and to

which the people litive given "their

heartiest approval.

FIRE HITS

FURRIERS

WITH VIM

Fire of unknown origin shortly after 10 o'clock last night caused damages to the amount of $9,200 at the Morris fur store, 724 Broadway. The flames gave three companies of firemen a good two-hour fight. -' The alarm was sounded at 10:08 p. m., the call coming in over the telephone. When the firemen arrived at the fur store it was completely filled with flames. The building is a two-story brick, of 60-foot frontage. It is owned by David Cohen of East Chicago and Joseph Stelner of Gary is -the agent. According to the firemen the building loss will amount to $C00. Damage to furs will aggregate, it is believed, $9,-000.

The old rolling; mill at Jollet is now

Immortalised by being placed on one

of the new parcels post stamps. The

twenty-five cent stamp labeled "Manu

facturing," is a view of the steel mills

looking from Columbia avenue as they

appeared several -years ago.

It Is doubtless due to some Influence on the part of Joe .Ralph, brother-in-law of Teddy Blnzen of Gary; and head of the bureau of engraving In.. Wash

ington, that the manufacturing stamp bears the view that It does. Friends

of Mr. Ralph In this city claim that the. engraving accurately represents the mills as they appeared when , he

left Jollet.. Those who have copies of I the. photographs are now placing them

upon exhibition.--joiiet News. -
