HAS OFFER OF THEE FIGHTS

Artie Stewart of Hammond, who demonstrated his class by holding Battling Nelson and Tommy Gary to draws at the Moose stags some time ago, has offers of three fights, according to his manager, Frank Campbell, who has charge of the Hammond wonder. ' Last week the first offer came from Albany, N. Y., where the eastern promoters want to match Young Stewart

Cincinnati, O., Jan. 4. Mordecai Brown, the "three-fingered wonder," for years star of the Chicago Cubs' pitching staff, will hurl for Cincinnati this season. Manager Joe Tinker today announced that he had put through a deal with Louisville whereby the once great pitcher J will get another

chance in the big league. It took considerable managerial acumen for Tinker to put through the deal, for Louisville's title to Brown was not any too clear. Tinker got permission from the Colonels to confer with Brown and a tentative agreement was made. Pitcher Grover loudermilk secured by Cincinnati in the deal that sent the Cub shortstop to the Reds as manager, was offered to Louisville in exchange for Brown. Louisville agreed to the trade provided Brown would be swapped back if the Cubs put in a claim for Brown. This was accepted by Tinker and the deal was concluded. Manager Tinker believes Brownyetill

is a great pitcher. If he makes good the Reds not only will pay him a bigger salary, but will forward a cash consideration to Louisville.' Loudermilk was with Louisville before coming to the Cubs.

RIVERS SURPRISES NEW YORK FANS

Hitting Power of Mexican

Startles Eastern Swat Experts.

New York, Jan. 4. Joe Rivers, the California lightweight, went through his first training stunts since his arrival here before a big crowd at 'Wood-

lawn Inn yesterday. Rivers began his

day's work with a five-mile run over I the roads of Westchester in the morning, and after a hearty meal and what Joe termed a "siesta", he put in two hours of strenuous work in the gymnasium. Rivers is remarkably fast.

and is a well-built boxer. From the waist up Rivers has the build of a muscular middleweight. From the waist down he has the lines of a featherweight.

Joe exhibited a terrific punch sev

eral times. He rattled the punching

bag against its frame with solid wallops, and later, when he boxed two

rounds with his brother Andy, he put

over some blows that would have knocked out an ordinary welterweight.

even though the gloves were extra large training pillows:

Rivers now weighs less than 135

pounds, and Levy announced that his

boxer would be able to make the

weight even if the contest with Leach

Cross, which is scheduled to be held at

the Kmplre A. C. on Jan. 14, were to be

put on today.

From now until the day of the con

test with Cross, Rivers will steadily in

crease his day's work. Beginning to

day he will box dally with Packey

Hommoy, "Bull" Thompson and his

brother Andy, and will wrestle with

Abdul the Turk, his trainer.

Leach Cross spent a quiet day at

Lakewood. He will not begin training

until next week. raREYWS i WELLS AND J'CARTY

When George Duncan, the famous English professional, was in Chicago some of our professionals took him downtown to show him the tall buildings. He was overwheemld with wonder. A few nights later he was going to the Illinois Central station at Van Buren street when a newly risen moon was shining above bridge and water. It was a most attractive spectacle, and Duncan paused and gazed. Then he said: "I tell you what, Sandy, you may have taller buildings here, but there's one thing sure the moon's no bigger than it was in Scotland." Some players when putting move their toes up and down as if operating a player piano, and a certain face

tious golfer has named this style the

"pianola putt." There is another play

er who has injured a particularly good

drive by waving his club like a flag at the top of his swing. Mr. Daly, of Nashville has named this the "patriotic stroke." When Andrew Kirkaldy was in America a few years ago he played in a foursome with his brothers, Hugh and Jack Kirkaldy and Douglas Rolland. Andrew and his partner lost, and he was loud in his expressions of disgust. A few professionals anxious to see a repetition of his anger asked him

who played In the foursome, and he replied: "Me and masel, my brother Hugh and I, Jack, Duggte Rolland and

me."

Douglas Teedle once played In a

game In one or the smaller towns in

the middle west where the local rules

display a kindly regard for the unfor

tunate. If a player were so unlucky as to reach the rough he was allowed to extract the ball a club's length and

play from the new lie. St. Andrews,

Los Angeles, Cal., Jan. 4. Bombar dier Billy Wells, on parade as the Eng

llsh heavyweight champion, can find a

ready market for his wares in Los An geles. Luther McCarty, so recentlry brand

ed as the successor to Jim Jeffries' ring honor, has pointed his finger at Wells

and named July 4 next as the date for

the prospective mixup.

Promoter Tom McCarey stands ready

to handle the International affair, fig

uring to build a new arena shed on the site where the old "Vernon mint" now

stands.

Freddie Welch, who is in England

has been named as the man to explain

the situation to Wells and it is ex

pected that the British lightweight

champion will hurry Barnbardier to the gang plank and start him for America

In short order.

"We will give Wells the first chance because we believe him to be the man the public would like to see in the

ring against Luther," said Manage Billy McCarney.

"Let Wlllard, Daly and a few of those 'no-decision' demons come to the

coast and fight among themselves. I the survivor looks like the genuine a tide we will give him an early date. "McCarty Is one champion who doe not Intend to do any side stepping."

A McCarty-Wells battle would bring

together two clever big men. Both

Jim Flynn and Al Palzer belong to th slugger type. Against this pair all th science was on McCarty's side.

Pitted against Wells, the new Cham plon would face a fast and clever op

ponent. How Luther would handl

himself under such conditions remain

to be seen. - Al Palzer claims that Wells is ei

more scientific than jMcCarty and pick

the Briton to win. Having met both

men, Palzer is entitled to his opinion

but in all probability the Los Angeles

betting public would make McCarty strong favorite over the Bombardier.
