BARBERS PLAY KRIS K INGLE TO 200 ORPHANS.

-N '-"aY ' .

Thirty missionaries "of the Christmas season, equipped with scissors, clippers, razors, and apron?, sallied forth from the headquarters of the Barbers' union yesterday morning bent on turning upside down the old Christmas rule that it is better to give than to receive. Before night they had deprived 200 youngsters In a half dozen of Chicago's charitable institutions of 200 shocks of hair. The barbers were distributing free hair cuts. Since that article has gone up to 35 cents It has come to be a luxury. The barbbers are planning to make the hair clipping excursion a monthly affair.

That Chicago boxers are enthusiastic over the chance of doing business with the new Calumet Athletic club at Gary was proved yesterday when two local tars called off negotiations with out-of-town clubs in order to sign for the all-star show which opens the new Indiana arena New Year's day. Danny Goodman had a chance to box at Fond du Lac on the evening of Dec. 30, and Spike Kelly practically was matched for a bout at Indianapolis on the first of the year with "Wild CatFerns. Goodman already had suffered a postponement from the out-of-town promoters, and when he was offered an

chance. The Indianapolis promoters had been flirting with Kelly for some , days, but Fred Gilmore called off all : negotiations last night and signed ar- : tides for his welterweight to meet j Morris Bloom before the Calumet club ! at the opening show. j One Inducement that Gilmore took : into consideration was a promise that If Kelly met Eloom the winner would : be matched with Bill "Walters for a star ! bout in the near future. The local fol- . lowers of the glove artists consider Bloom and Kelly two of the best men In Chicago at the welterweight limit, j While Walters did not show to great ! advantage in his bout at St. Joe last j Friday night he still Is believed to be I one of the best welters In the game, ! and will be given a chance as long as ! he puts up as good fights as he has fur

nished around Chicago since he started out. Goodman has been anxious to get on a big card around Chicago for a long time, and he willingly signed last night to meet Unhols, although Rudy Is considered one of the hardest men to meet In the lightweight class today. These

"I started out with the heavyweights merely to settle the question of which was the best man, Jim Flynn. Al Palzer or i Luther McCarty, as I felt that the public looked upon these three as the most promising heavies in America. that he made hay while the sun shone in gay Paree. He whipped two parties known to fame as Georges Carpentler and George Bernard and picked up plenty of extra change bobbing his blond head behind the footlights in France and Germany. William Is something of a ring financier himself, and is adding steadily to his Kewanee bank roll, even If the New York boxing commission has slipped the ban on him. Papke Is In a position right now to ignore American promoters. He was roasted on the west coast when last there and panned in the east. Nothing daunted, he went abroad and convinced everybody over there that he is a great ringman. What is more, he asserts that there is more money for him in Europe than on this side. So he should worry a lot and build a house on it because of the New York commission's attitude. BRIGHTER OUTLOOK FOR KEOKUK TEAM Keokuk, la., Dec. 24. Plans are being perfected for the benefit of the local baseball situation which, If they carry through, will place George Pen

nington, manager of Kewanee's second place club last year. In charge of the Keokuk club. Pennington has al- , ready been signed to manage Kewanee again this year, but a trade will be effected to secure his release. Pat Hilly, Keokuk outfielder. Is mentioned in the trade. Local men will back the club, providing Pennington Is placed in charge, and the fans are bending their

efforts toward securing his release.
