The transportation committee of the Commercial club of Indiana Harbor and East Chicago went to Indianapolis this morning to attend a re-hearing of the Pennsylvania depot case. On the representation of the railroad company that It had made certain repairs on lis present shack -which answers for a depot, and that thee meet the requirements demanded by the citizens of Indiana .Harbor, a restraining order was entered in court, restraining' the railroad commission from enforcing the building of a new depot. The mission of the Commercial club committee, which Is headed by C. E. Fowler, is to testify that the requirements have not been met by any maner of means and that the necessity for a new depot is just as urgent as it ever w. At the club ifleeUngkProbert Ansley brought up the matter of the slaughter that it constantly going on
at the Michigan avenue crossing of the Pennsylvania railroad. He said that at a recent inquest at which he presided as deputy coronor, a Pennsyl
vania representative told him more persons were killed and maimed at this crossing than nt any other point over which the railroad passes. Dr.j-Ansley suggested that the rail-

road company be requested to put' on a flagman at this crossing in addition to the gates already maintained there. It was said that the gates are lowered so far In advance of the arrival of trains, that the public has ceased to pay any attention to them. ant the majority of people using the crossing, proceed as though there were no gates
there, whether they are raised or lowered. Dr. Ansley thought that if a flagman, were placed in charge of the crossing, the. slaughter would soon be materially decreased, especially If the flag were invested with police power to arrest all who attempt to cross in front of moving: trains. , C. K. Wallace, who attended the good roads convention' at Indianapolis gave a splendid report of the proceedings, which was heard with much interest. The report of the delegates to the Rivers and Harbors committee meeting at Washington was also read, and 1,000 copies ordered printed for distribution. Secretary Crltes who filled the office
for the first time, gives evidence of being a most satisfactory official, his report and all of his business being shipshape. He was instructed to draw up a letter expressing to Judge Walter J. Riley the sympathy of the club in his bereavement. Vice President Kirk had called a directors meeting to arrange for the sending of flowers, but nothing was done on account of the notices of the funeral reading "no flowers."
crats will support him In case he does. There Is' considerable talk of naming a citizens ticket with Alderman. William S. Fuer as the standard bearer. Feuer has made a good record In the council. - , Alderman Rowley, Hess and Gallagher are eyeing each other like scouts on the- trait of Jack rabbit as each would like to be mayor on a republican or independent ticket. -,

the method of amending .the constitution, laid down by the fathers, is too cumbersome. Only two states Arizona and Massachusetts have so ratified the Brlstow amendment for the popular eelctlon of senators. Under the constitution, as it stands, affirmative action by thirty-four more state Legislatures will be required. Thlrty-flve state Legislatures are to mee this winter. The enemies of the reform are busy all through the South, trying to Incite prejudic against It bocause of the feature of the Brlstow
amendment, which reserves In the Federal government the power to
regulate the manner of holding sena torial elections. Argument of Opponents.
This, it is contended, is an unwarranted interference with states' rights.
and Crumpacker is convinced it will
.result in the rejection of the amend
'ment by a number of Southern states.
In Georgia and other parts of the South a strong sentiment Is being worked up against the pending propo
sition, which menaces its adoption. "I am heartily in favor of the resolu
tion which Crumpacker intends to in
troduce," said Senator Bristow tonight, "although I believe my amendment can
and will be ratified under the ma
chinery as now provided for amend

this connection to know that the plat
form of the Baltimore convention calls upon the people of all the' states to
rally to the support of the Brlstow
amendment.

Whether- it was a disappointed love

cheerless existence in the past and her lonely position caused her to decide to end it all.

And In fhla rwork some of the county captains wll y take a .' hand. Cain worked a;ia the election of Auditor-elect Ed Simon and as Simon is once more la tb saddle he Is - Itching- to glv Caina trimming." John B. fought his first nomination two years

The action of the senate In tying up sonti of President Taft's nominations affects the Hobart postefllce. Mr. Truesdell, named by the president to succeed the late Mr. Linkhart, may not get the $1700 Job after all. In such an event Congressman Peterson will name the lucky. man soma time after March

Edltr Smith la Race.
There are two leading candidates for the Hobart postmastership. One is William Kostbadt, an old time wheel horse, and the other Is Editor A. J. Smith of the' Hobart Gazette. Editor Smith, his friends say, haa given time and money to the party and might own an automobile now if he hadn't mixed in politics.- They also cite that he rah for office twice to help
the party out.
There Is considerable speculation ai to who will be Congressman Peterson'i secretary. The Job pays $1500 a yea but it costs more than that to live in Washington, especially if there is an extra Ion? session of congress. It Is pointed out that the berth would be a good one for some young lawyer who wants to get an Insight lnt statesmanship or for some country editor who must be rewarded. It Is'' also possible that Mr. Peterson may
appoint his daughter to the Job.
of politics are talking of . inducing Alderman Tim Englehart of the Ridge road district to come out for mayor. Englehart is prepident of the biggest independent real estate company in town and has a barrel of money to fi

He is known as one of the honest men In the council and unlike some of his colleagues he has not kissed the skirts of the United States Steel corporation by trying to put over some of the "frameups" of some of its official factions. On the other hand, he has not been an obstructionist and has aided the trust in its just demands and his fair attitude in such that he has received letters of commendation from Chairman E. H. Gary and from his Chicago assistant, E. J. Buffington, president of the Indiana Steel company. Englehart does not like to come out against Knotts but hundreds of demo-
