afternoon, but the' workmen left the body where they found it and late yesterday afternoon notified the coroner after having determined whether Lake or Porter county had Jurisdiction in the case, as the scene of the possible murder Is on the county border, one mile from Lake,Mlchlgan. Today the remains were taken to Wilde's morgue at Hobart Cannot Be Identified.
No Identifying papers were found on
the remains and the. face was so badly
decomposed that no identification was
possible. It Is estimated that the body might be that of a man 30 years old. Near the body was found a derby hat. The victim wore a suit of clothes, but
what color can't be determined owing
to the havoc workd by the prairie fire
He also wore black laced shoes and a
red sweater coat. Judge- Is Interviewed. Judge William Westergren, justice of the peace at Miller,' a'hd superintendent of the sand pits at Dock Siding, was present shortly after the discovery of the body. "I should judge,4 said he "that the body had been there from three to four months. It was fifteen feet away from the old stage coach trail and more than 100 feet from the railroad tracks. The body was too far, from' the rails for the man to have been struck" by a train. It looks as if the corpse was carried to the spot after being injured or killed. "The corpse was lying face downward. Strange Tmrt of Cane. "Now the. fanner ' .thing about this case' Is that I rode Oh this lonely trail dally, going to . arlKf rorn the pits on horseback, "Whenever a body 'Is. in these fields for any length of tlroe-rahd we have found quite a 'few of them there, all unknown fellows, in the past ten years discovery tfl the, . remains Is usually made possible by? the presence of : a large number of . rows that come to eat the flesh. , - '. ; . , 7There were : no'Jcrbwa seen here for some months I noticed, however, that my horse always'"" became frightened when he passed the spot and the last ten or twelve days he always turned his head and reared. "If that body had been here befo"re ten or twelve days the horse would have showed some of these signs. groes, Ratford and. a pal believed to be
Charlie Sanders, entered the cafe and
asked how long they would have .to wait for some chop suey, saying they
wanted to take it with them.- They
were told that it would take about ten
minutes and were left alone in front of
the restaurant. While Sanders stood
guard Ratford slipped behind the
counter and secured the money box from the bottom compartment. He then hurriedly lef t . the place, leaving
Sanders alone, ostensibly to get the chop suey and throw possible pursuers
jog the scent. Shortly after Ratford left
one of the proprietors came ln and Sanders grew restless, . asking how
soon his order would be ready. "I guess I will not 'Walt,' he said, and laid the money for the chop suey down on the counter. The waiter brought ln his chop suey and .Sanders left, going straight to his boarding house, where he ate his supper.. ' ,'; HAD AKT HOl'R LEEWAY. Fully an hour passed before the robbery was discovered. This gave the thieves a big lead on the Hammond police department. Early this morning Ratford was arrested by the Gary police department ln Gary on suspicion, having on his person $200 In currency and a diamond ring. At first he denied having stolen the money, but later broke down and made a full confession to Chief Martin
of the Gary police. He will be brought back to Hammond by Officer Trost this afternoon. Sanders has made his getaway and for fear of getting into trouble Is hiding somewhere In Chicago. So far no trace of him has been found.
For nearly two weeks Ratford and his accomplice have been loitering ln front of the King Hung Lo restaurant waiting for an opportunity to see
