the wlndup fighters and hooted them, particularly Gibbons, from the third

round on, at times begging them to get busy and do a little fighting. Gibbons seemed to know before he ntarted that he had tackled a job that was too tough for him in meeting one of the very best of the country's middleweights. He did not lash out with a single blow ln the first round and seldom took the offensive hereafter. Occasionally he opened up for a moment or so when the crowd demanded action, but they were only flashes ln the pan. Mike did manage to draw a little claret from the McGoorty nose and to give Eddie a bump over one eye, but he did not land a punch that even shook up the Oshkosh fighter. McGoorty did his best to make a fight of it. He was trying all the time, but Gibbons was steadily on the back trail, and so clever was his defense that It was mighty hard work for Eddie to get home with solid punches. He did considerable damage at that. He had Mike looking weary and faded when the ten cpunds of milling were over. It got so bad at one stage of the en counter thatafter the men bad loosened up for a second and landed a couple of stinging punches apiece Jteferee Billy Joh said: "Come on, boys, fight like that." Then Mike got scared

as Prance's last hope. J Papke unbundled a bewildering sort

of punches in the fifth, and when the gong sounded Bernard was a beaten man. He went to his corner worried, while Papke. smiled and waved to the crowd. Tapke started to rush in tne sixth. He was on top of Bernard from the sound of the, bell and sent the Frenchman spinning through the ropes with & right Jolt to the .law. Bernard took the count of nine and got up only to be beaten back to the ropes by Papke's rushes. Bernard tried to right back and then stalled, hoping to last the round out. Papke measured him and again sent his right to the jaw, and the Frenchman sank in a heap on the floor. He was knocked out cold, but the gong sounded as nine was counted, and his seconds hurried him to his corner. They worked hard over him, but he was unable to respond when the bell sounded for the next round.

Paris, France, Dec. 6. Billy Papke, the American middleweight, clinched the title of middleweight champion of France and, according to the French boxing commission, the world's title, when he battered George Bernard Into submission in" six rounds of a scheduled twenty-round battle here last night. The fight ended as the gon,r clanged for the save.uth round, B-ji-nard being unable to get out of his chair. He was In a state of physical collapse from the beating he received In the sixth round. The battle was for a big purse and an Ivory belt Inlaid with gold, which the French commission had ordered made, and which typifies the world's championship. Up to the fifth round Papke seemed to be fighting "under wraps." He was introduced as the world's middleweight champion., and Bernard was Introduced

KIANDOT TO REST UNTIL FEBRUARY

San Francisco, Cal., Dec. 5. Joe Mandot, the New Orleans lightweight, who is here on a visit with his manager, Harry Coleman, is in no particular hurry to get back into ring harness. Mandot lias boxed quite a number of times within the past few months and Coleman seems to have detected signs, of staleness in his charge. Coleman and Mandot will leave "or New Orleans via Los Angeles within a day or two and it is planned to give Mandot a few weeks' rest at Hot Springs, Ark. The boyish looking southern br.xer will not remain in the background long, however. He expects to be ready for the fray on Washington's birthday and Is ln hopes that matters will be arranged so that he can be seen In a San Francisco ring on that date. "There is more stir in the lightweight class than In any other division of pugilism Just now and Joe

should have no difficulty in commanding matches during 1913," said -Coleman. "The promoters will not find us hard to deal with. We look forward to bouts with Wolgast, Rivers and Ritchie."

Football and boxing do not jibe, according to Jimmy Clabby of Hammond. Last Sunday afternoon Jimmy thought he would like to play Just one more game of football, so donning his football togs he played In the lineup with his team the Clabby A. A. He played a stellar game of course, but this week James has been so sore and stiff that It has been agony for him

to move a muscle.

Friday night at Racine Jimmy was

scheduled to battle ten rounds with

Young Mahoney, but Jimmy will not

grace the ring as he was forced to call off the bout on account of his soreness.

Neither will the popular young welterweight don his football togs again, as it will be the gloves for him hereafter. But Jimmy wanted to help his team win, with the above result.

Very little training work has been

done by Clabby this week, but by the

first of next he hopes to get down to

hard training work again. With the exception of his sore muscles Clabby is

n good condition and Is prepared for l number of fights which are sched

uled in the near future. Clabby's manager, Frank Mulkern, may take the

Hammond welter to Paris next year, where several fine offers have been

made him.
