CUTE LITTLE FAIRY TALE 18 STARTED

Politicians Down at Indianapolis Are Going Nutty Now That Election Is Over; Trotting Out Ralston for Presidency.

TIMES' Ml UK VI AT TIIK STATE CAPITAL. Indianapolis, I ml., Nov. 21. Politicians start some big thlnss in Indiana, And the latest movement started by them is a boom for f-'amuel M. Kalston for the demorratic nomination for president in 1918. As yet the boom has rot assumed any screat proportions, but It Is being: talked about. The promoters say that ""'cod . w- Vusim cannot be a candidate for re-nomination in 191S because the Baltimore platform limited him to one form and he made the declaration that he would onlv accept one nomination. So that

eliminates him from

not do as a candidate because he has been defeated too often. AA ant AA'rMernert Wilson ia an eastern man, and that makes It necessary, they say, that the next democratic candidate for president shall come from the wild and wooly wst. In this connection they point out that Kalston is the Msgest democrat in the mlddlewest at this time, since Oovfrnor Marshall has been elected to the vice residency. They declare that history proves that the vice presidency is a political ftravo yard, and that Marshall never will be able to graduate from that office into the presidency. Jarres Cox, the newly

elected democratic governor of Ohio, j

is practically unknown outside bis own state: Governor-I"iect Ferris of Michigan Is in the name class; there Is no democrat In Illinois of presidential size; Ollie .Tamos of Kentucky will be a I'nlted States senator; former Governor Folk of Missouri Is no lonKfr presidential timber, and that leaves only Speaker Champ Clark to be considered as a

rival of Kalston for the nomination. nfffrMt TliylcnHy Anyway.

It is pointed out that Ralston, having carried his home tate by such an enormous plurality, is the blfrfrest democrat

I of all In this section, and that it puts I him directly in line for the nomination. I Kalston boosters say that Halston would have the support of Bryan, who, ; undoubtedly, wir rule the next demo- '. cratic national convention as he ruled ; the last one at Bilttmoro. Halston and j Bryan are close friends, and Bryan cerI talnly would come to Ralston's aid if f necessary to Ket the nomination for him. Brvan would not b for Clark.

So takintc It altogether the Kalston talk is interestlr.fr. Some of Kalston's more enthusiastic friends are sayinKK that they Intend to push the boom. Ah There. Hull Moaner. There are a lot of bull moosers in the city today for the love feast which they

consideration I will hold tonltrht. Albert J. Reveridge.

Georfre Ade is expected to serve as chairman of the meeting tonight, but if he does not show up Rudolph Leeds, of Kchmond, Profrressl ve national committeeman, will be the chairman. I-.ee says he is looking for a larfre attendance, and that Progressives all over the state have sent word that they are comlnfr. L.. Ert Slack, of Franklin, will accept the appointment as Cnited States district attorney if it is offered to him. He said so yesterday, and there is some talk that he may land the place. His friends say that It would be a wise move, tn the interest of Democratic party harmony If the Taetcart outfit would appoint Slack to that position.

because Slack has foufrht the Taftart

crowd at times, and if It had not been for TaKfrart throwing the Kalston

tsrenpth to Marshall in the state con

vention of four years aro Slack would

have been nominated for Governor.

A meetinft of the progressive state committee is being held this afternoon for the purpose of laying; plans for keeping the organization intact and keeping state headquarters open for the next two years. A press bureau will be maintained and reading matter will be supplied to all newspapers in the state that will use it. City Ticket In Field. One of the subjects that will be up for discussion today and tonistht; in fact, the most important, will be that of placing city and town tickets in the field in every city and town in the state next year. Kdwln W. Lee. progressive state chairman, says it is the intention for the progressive party to have municipal tickets In every place. He says the progressive party is the second party In the state and that as such It Is necessary that It nominate city tickets. The question of financing tha movement in the entx; two years, between campaigns, Is one that Is causing some anxiety, but Lee says this problem will

is the reason for the shortage In rab

When the hunting season opened

pessimistic reports began to filter in from local hunters, but the public generally thought they did not go to the

right place and that big hunting tales would soon begin to be told. However, day after day goes by and the hunters

home empty handed or else with, perhaps, one skinny rabbit and two or three quail. They all declare the game Is not here to be found and they must be right about it.

A few years ago when Z. T. Sweeney

was state fish and game commissioner.

he turned loose on game preserves in this county a great many Hungarian partridges and Mongolian pheasants. These preserves were to be closed for a certain number of years and the land owners obligated themselves not to hunt on their own land during the closed period. Meanwhile it was expected the imported pheasants and partridges would increa.s- and multiply and replace the rapidly thinning ranks of quail. Hunters now say they never get a glimpse of either pheasants or partridges. These birds mostly froKe to death, the same as the .quail. It is said, and it is not believed there

are a hundred of them left in the oou nty. Some of the hunters declare that they know of farmers who went into the game preserve agreement who have violated this agreement and hunt on the preserves, making "pot shots," and violating the agreement and the ethics of the game at one and the same time. In this manner they declare the city hunter is shut off from the sport, while the man who agreed to keep his land closed for five years to give the new birds a chance to multiply violates the agreement and kills the birds. This charge Is not made against all farmers

who went into game preserve agreements, but local hunters declare it applies to several.

Their recent victories give women a choice in the allotment of thirty-three more electoral votes Michigan, 15; Kansas, 10; Oregon, 6, and Arizona, 3.

1'eople who dined sumptously on

rabbit stewed, fried or a la hash, las

winter, will probably have to import

their bunnies if they have them on th table this season. The rabbit crop i

so scarce that one hungry man could

probably eat In a day all the rabbits that have h(n brought to the local

market thus far.

One local grocer who always has game in season said this morning that

not a rabbit had been offered him and he added that lie did not expect any. Another grocer who gets a whack at the hunters who come in from the west said that but three rabbits had been offered to him inoe the hunting season opened. He sold them, dressed, for 20 cents each. The grocer said that the men who brought in the three rabbits spent an entire day hunting for them, while last year they brought in from twenty to forty about three times a week. Last year dressed rabbits sold for as low as 10 cents each and every grocer had enough to supply all demands. Rabbits with their clothes on sold last year for even less than a dime e.ich. This year the few that will be offered for sale will remain high, either dressed or undressed. Practically every hunter who goes afield declares the game crop is the shortest he ever saw. Places where rabbits used to sit and fairly beg to be shot may now be combed with a fine tooth comb and not even a rabbit track seen. The extreme cold weather last winter and the length of time the snow remained on the ground is given
