Youngsters Are Taught the First Principles at Exciting Election.
Everybody's doin' it. Doim what? Why voting, of course. Even to tha school boys and girls to the third grada babies. Little suffragettes aa well aa the embryo lords of creation, are casting their ballots with all the earnestness of their elders, and indeed a great deal more in many cases. At the McKinley school only the seventh and eighth grades are holding; election. The voting is in lieu of tho usual history lesson. It is strictly a Fflcret ballot, and there are booths In threo of the rooms. Miss Hampton's, Miss Keller's and Mrs. Cox's, with regulation fifty foot marks, and the voters must walk down the regulation, passage way to cast their ballot, or it doesn't count, and there are clerks and Judges of election. Inspectors, watchers and sheriffs, Just as there are in grown-up voting- places. The regulation sample ballots are used, so that the boys and girls may vote the entire ticket or they are privileged to do as much scratching as they wtsh, and no one any the wiser, for the ballot as stated before is a dead secret one. In th Washington school It is differ
ent. There are no booths there, but what they lack in the way of paraphernalia, they make up in the numbers of the voters, for it is here that all of the scholars from the third grade up, are taking a hand in the game of naming a president. In all the schools where history is taught the lessons for the past few ' days have been on civics, especially as they relate to the election bws. The children have been taught how the election is worked out in precincts, townships, counties and state, the function of the election board and the exact method of voting the straight ticket, as well as how to scratch their ballots without invalidating them. Principal T. K. Williams is willing to back his eltrhth grado boys and girls against any body of men in the country, to vote technically correct. Kvn the seventh graders would make better voters, so far as knowing how to vote that their votes count, than many a clttsen who thinks he has been voting for these many years, but whose vote when the ballots are bing checked up, goes into the discard, because he has made some mistake in marking his ticket, thereby invalidating !t. At the Washington school, debate on subjects political waged fast and furious last week. There was the socialist party against the bul moosers, and the republicans against the democrats. Victory In the final debate perched on he socialist banner, although the old line republicans marched to victory In the early stages of the debates, but went down under the fierce onslaughts of argument as advanced by the socialists In the finals. The winners of the, dbat between socialists and progressives were Morris Mumenthal, Charles Hurket qnd Harold Kroupa representing the socialist. The debate between the republican and democ ratic parties went to these young republicans: Kphraim Fein. Nellie Fulmer and Dallas Stewart. Hut when the socialists tried lances with the republicans, the former won. The ballots will be counted tonight
