Urpiece, as was to be expected, and he propounded argument after argument as to why the present administration and times should be co'ntinued. He spoko on the evils of free trado. and said the tariff question was the chief differ nee between the Republican and Oemocratic platforms this year, and stated that the latter party had never been able to handio. the tariff situation without most disastrous results to the country. Shahifm the Claim. Watson's ihi. f point of attack, however, was upon the. bull moose corral, and he went over th ground from the
time that Roosevelt got the third term j
bee in his bonnet, months before the National convention. He knocked the cry of stealth and fraud allo-ed to have be-on practiced at the Chicago convention by Teddy into a cocked hat, and his position as iloor lender among that memorable battle gave him ample opportunity to know the situation as it took place. He took up the various contests f.,r delegates and showol that In no rase was there stealth or fraud practiced, stating that the 1012 convention was siM'aphic in comparison to the convention "f 19ns when RooseVflt's steam roller was in excellent condition "and rolled over the opusition to Taft at that time.." He recounted the efforts made by the Republicans at that convention to compromise on a third candidate, Gov. Hadl. y being suggested, and of the emphatic refusal of Roosevelt to join in the idea, he heaping ahuso, upon Had'cy and tho delegat's si nt on that mission. He showed Teddy up in his most damaging light, as an adroit politician, a. remorseless boss and one possessed of an unsatlated ambition to rule or ruin Watson was repeatedly applauded, and although the crowd was small compared . to the usual Watson gatherings. It made up for its lack in numbers by general enthusiasm. His argument was simply unanswerable and his statement that he had repeat etly challenged Pevoridge to a debate upon the Chicago convention matters and the latter's refusal Fhowed more elearly tlian anything else that the alletred fraud practiced was nothing more than hearsay and an infamous scheme to blacken 1h Republican party in the eyes of the country.

Everybody wanted to know at one and the same time, why central rang Hum up without connecting them with the party who wished to speak with them, and as the b.iis continued to ring in some instances for a few minutes at a time, there was much indignation. It developed that the mischief was ali due to a fallen trolley wire at 13sth and Euclid avenue, which not only demoralized ib.e telephone service for

traffic. The trouble began at 5 o'clock. The power m storiousiy went off and

but the police are watching- them carefully. Chief of Police John Okraj is going to keep everything closed. He lias made up his mind not to comprnmN-) with the dive keepers. He knows that the reform element will get his job if he does and any way he intends to do his sworn duty and enforce- the law. Okraj said: "Everything is closed as tight as a drum and this is no joke. You can come over and see for yourself. And we are going to keep it that way. We had nothing lut trouble when the dives art' running and we do not pnaposo to give those fellows a chance to prefer any more bribery charges against us. The best way to avoid tho suspicion of crookedness is to keep the dives from running. Just as soon as they start the public has a light, to think that you are getting something or you would not tolerate it."
