Lurking around the McKinley school building where his nine year old daughter P.eulah was in tending classes in Miss Coffin's room, George R. Shindel of Mai shalLo w a, Iowa, who is said to be under $1,0' 0 bonds for a murderous assault upon his wife, the little girl's mother, yesterday enticed the child to fco away with him. ' He was t laced to the Northwestern depot in Chicago, but the police were power

less to arrest him on the charge of kidnaping, Mrs. Shindel having no decree of court granting to her the custody of the little one. Mrs. Shindel was apprised of what had happened, by Miss Coffin, Heulah's teacher, who saw the child wating at the corner where she and her father were about to take a i ar for the city. Up to the time of receiving the message Mrs. Shindel who has been in East Chleaso only a week or two knew nothing of the fact that her husband was in the vicinity. About two or three weeks airo Shindel, according to report, attempted to kill his wife. He did not succeed in this but wounded her in the hand. She had him arrested and he was placed under a bond of $1,000 which he furnished. Mrs. Shindel, fearing for her own life and for the safety of her children, came to East Chicago with her three little ones, and has since been

stopping with f I lends at 4i3S Olcott

avenue. Tim little girl. lieulah was

placed in school at once, being entered

in Miss Coffin's room. Mrs. Shindel

said nothing of her family troubles to Mr. AYilliams nor to Miss Coffin, but the latter hrard in some way that sh:s and her husband were separated, yesterday afternoon when a man representing himself as I'.'-ulah's father called at the school and asked to take the Utile girl home with him. Miss Coffin declined to dismiss the child. She questioned P.eulah before school was out, but 0,ieaey forbade her to ask as pointed questions as she would have liked, and she gained the impression indirectly by the child's answers that the domestic troubles of the parents, might have been patched up. Reulah left the school with the other children, and the teactier followed soon after. Shindel must have remained in the. vicinity of tho building, for when Miss Coffin reached 14Sth street and Forsyth avenue she saw the man and

child standing on trie corner waning , for a car. Something told her that something was wrrmg, and she. hastened back the school where flie ciniii b.d hi r suspicions to Mr. T. K. AA'illiains. t : principal of the McKir ley building. ' advised her to get into communication with Mrs. Shindel at once, which she did and Mrs. Shindel notified the police, who traceed Shlndi 1 und his child to the Northwestern depot where they were olliced to drop the case, Mrs. Shindel having- nothing to give her authority over her daughter. The mother is prostrated over the loss of the child and will take steps to recover her.

THEY ARE NOT HITCHING POSTS Any driver who ia so lost to art as to reaard East Chicago's and Indiana Harbor's new ornamental illumination system as nothing more nor less than a convenient means of hitchins: his team to, mpy as well begin to cultivate his mind up to a pitch of proper appreciation of the real uses and benefits of a great white way from an esthaetic standpoint. Incidentally he may disabuse his mind of the idea that he can ever make use of any of the ornamental shafts as hitching posts. Ha cannot. Such is the order of Chief of Polio Leo McCormack, ably seconded by Sergeant John A ei fenbach. Sergeant Mlka Gorman, Sergeant Hilly Hughes and Sergeant Frank' Parkt r, and with the, entire force to back up their superiors. Should any driver after this warning
