afternoon when tney ddtatc-d the crack Bo-wen h'.ph school of South Chicaero by a handsome score of 24 to 0. Althoueh outweighed five pounds to a man, Hammond played with a determination to win and by their cleverness, speed and -well-balanced lineup they demonstrated that they rutclassed Bowcn In all departments of the fame. In 1910 It w!U be remembered that Bowen captured the minor championship of Chicago and last season only lost the same laurels by the defeat of Crane high school. The Hammond high school team realized this and Saturday when they stacked up against the much-touted Bowen, they knew It would be either "do or die" and they certainly turned the trick. Not only did Hammond sprins a surprise amonif their larre following: of admirers, but they surprised themselves by their speed, cleverness and durability. From the time of the first
whistle Hammond took the Bowen warriors off their feet and by uslni; old style football tactics and forward passes at intervals they pushed the pifrskin over for four well-earned touchdowns. The first quarter saw Hammond and Bowen battle with grim determination for a touchdown, as in this section of the Kame they appeared evenly matched and it looked like neither side would b able to score. In the second quarter Hammond came back with a new vim while How-en weakened ?ip-
of practice. In took the pi ir - the first down, in Hammond's
parently from the lack this euarter Hammond skin down the Held for the first half resulting
favor by a score of G to 0. After this Bowen did not appear to have a gtinst of a show as Hammond carried the pifiskin for lartre jjains. seldom needing- the fourth down. Whitaker, in his first football year at quarter back, ran his team like an old veteran. Puttlnp the forward pass to pood advantage and occasionally a trick play and line formation, he had the crack Bowen team suessint; which way they were cominsr from. With this kind of work Hammond gained three more touchdowns in the next half, Hammond being- hailed the victors by a score of 24 to . It will' be a day Ion;-; t be remem
bered In hith school athletics and each player deserves individual mention on account of hl brilliant work and lnntr sensational runs. Hirsch loomed up as the star of the day, beine- the blfrest jrround ecalner. Once he had the pigskin in hif clutches he would break away from tie bunch and it was no use tryincr to catch him. The balance
of the Hammond team deserve equal praise and by the hard drill work of Coach Ownes he lias a team to be justly proud of. The lineup was: Bowen -Cot te r, c; Carpenter, r. k ' YVooloy, r. t.; Reilley, r. e.; Hewin, q h.; Winowski f b. : Erwin, r. h. b: Johnson, 1 h fc.: Jumlick, 1. e.: Wendrick, 1. t.: Beiiley. 1. kHammond Bauer, c; Mowrey, r. sr. 1 Swan ton. r. t.; f-'mith, r. e. ; Whitaker, q. b ; Hess, f. b.: Hudson, r. h. b.; A.
