bis hearers spellbound for two hours. If every citizen of Lake County could have heard that speech the bull
moose movement wouM bo ready for tho undertaker. And every voter will get an opportunity, if he is open to conviction, to hear other speeches like it. j The vote in Lake County will be a happy surprise to the republicans and a -woeful disappointment to the
bull moosers and democrats. And before the campaign has progressed another fortnight the republicans who
have, aligned themselves with the bull moose movement will have found
that they have embraced a forlorn
hope.
The meeting at Clary is the most
encouraging thing that, has happened
to th republic. in party since the campaign began a week or so ago. It
indicates that the huU moose bubble has bursted.
From now on it will be a scramble for the bandwagon and certain men who have been actively identified with the inopement will be the vest of their natural lives explaining their wandering after false gods.

HEAR BOTH SIDES. Though this paper Is red-hot for President V. H. Taft and unalterably opposed to free trade and free soup, it nevertheless welcomes New Jersey's distinguished governor, Woodrow Wilson to Gary. We trust that he will be honored by a big crowd to hear what he has to say. THE TIMES is not like the biassed, hidebound sheets that trv to ke-r) people
of the opposite political faith away from political speeches for fear that they will be converted. We do give ihe voter credit for common sense and believe that he possesses brains and can use them. L-c. him g-y to l f;r both sides. Let him hear both democratic and republican doctrine expounded and then he will be able to judge for himself as to the merits of each side. We bespeak for the distinguished republicans who are to speak in Gary tomorrow night, just as hearty consideration as we hope Governor Wilson will have.

dumbfounded wi'tnessvs were waved
out of the co lit room with a show of
finality and authority that would have done credit to the most autocratic sultan that Turkey ever had. AND WAYMAN IS THE MAN WHO STARTED OPT AS A REFORMER. The people of West Hammond will Judge Wavman hv the men
in their own city with whom he allies himself; and he has favored the dive keepers and crook. West Hammond has only 1,000 votes but it will utter a tremendous protest agai'ist Wayman and the manner in which he conducts his
office the next time he pokes his head above ib.f political horizon . For a long time the people of West Hammond suspected that Wayman was a prefer der. a hypocrite and a pseudo-reformer and now they know it. The handling of a witness before the last grant jury was a travesty on justice and ought to be severely rebuked by the Illinois Par Asociation or some other body that is supposed to conserve the rights of the people in our courts. The only other recourse is an ap
peal to the judges of one of the courts to call a special grand jury and hav
a special prosecutor appointed.

WAYMAN? POOH! It makes one's blood boil to read of the manner in which Assistant States
Attorney Franklin applied the gag rule in the recent vice inquiry in Chicago. The question of the advisability of a vice investigation does not enter into the matter although State's Attorney Wayman tries to inject it into the case. The facta are that a grand jury is impaneled for the purpose of investi
gating reports of the commission of crime and misdemeanors in the jurisdiction of the court. There were reports of wide open conditions in West Hammond and in Chicago and the Committee of Fifteen sought to secure the indictment of some of the most notorious of the numbers of the vice trust and the white slavers organization. Now Wayman may have personal reasons for wanting to protect the vicious and criminal in Chicago, "there are ample evidences of the inefficiency of the assistants he has sent to West Hammond to prosecute the dive keepers and other criminals. OUR ATTITUDE ON BOXING.
"Sportsman" wants to know what this paper thinks about boxing and! boxing shows. It certainly depends' on the point of view. Poxing in this
locality has been abused because of I
the Interference of a Certain roughneck Chicago element. Poxing, of itself, is a partime in which it may be taken that, every boy of Anglo-Saxon heritage nt some time has engaged if a boy of red blood and physical activity. Primarily every human by instinct seeks to acquire some method of defense against the. lurking fear of attack some day from some unknown force. Even the
coward by birth avails himself of j some method of knowledge in this' respect, although, to his shame, per-j haps, by a resort to weapons which! involve various degrees of unfairness.!
An eminent force in the ecclesiastical world is quoted as follows: "If there were more fisticuffs there would be less gun play. If all nations had cherished the prize ring as the sturdy
Englishman has, our police courts;
would not be congested with cases in-; volving he carrying of stilettos and; pistols." We mny accept this or not, as it.
pleases our fancy, yet we cannot help but think that it implies a vigorous amount of truth and. while no brief is held for the prize ring or the public boxing match, wo at least may throw aside our hypocrisy for the moment, and agree that a rough pastime which inculcates fair play Is not without its good points, in that it teaches to an element which can well bear the teaching that it is the manly man who gives his opponent opportunity to meet him on even
terms and only the coward, the sneak and the assassin who revel in 'striking a man behind his back." We are for boxing for Lake county promoters and patronage not for Chicago leeches and levee habitues.
