Manager H. C. Green, of the Hammond, Whiting & East Chicago Hallway company, takes issue with Attorney William J. Wh'.nery when he declared before the Hammond Chamber of Commerce that there has been a -5 per cent increase in the business of the company. Manager Green says that he is willing to lay tare the figures that will show that since the fifteen-minute ser'lce has been installed there has been a reduction in the earnings per car hour, per car mile. That is, take the total earnings of the Hammond. Whit';nn i: East ('hicapo Railway company and divide them

There has been a very decided increase in the price of hard coal. Prices ratine from $8.00 t" $11.00 per ton, but managers ofj. the companies in the' Calumet region lefuse to supply more than one ton to a customer. No relief is expected until navigation closes on the prreat lakes. The reason for this is the fact that most of the coal that is shipped to the northwest jroes by way of lake steamers and the western demand is fully sup- . plied before the middle western and ! eastern customers are supplied. j Strike and Car Shortage. J The real cause of the deficiency is;

the tact that in tne spring oi the present year there was a 75 days' strike in the anthracite fields. This limited the supply and It is said that there is a million tons less coal mined this year than last. To have a coal famine right at the bi pinning of the winter is a pretty serious matter. mo of the local coal dealers was asked whether or not there would lie an improvement in conditions. He said he thought that as soon as navafration
