like a riot was In progress. Just then an auto happened along. In it was W. P. Gleason, general superintendent of the steel plant, and one of his secretaries. Seeing the racket, he stopped the car and stood up in the machine. "Beat it; there.'s the big boss," piped a machinist helper. "BIgga, da boss coming." responded 40 ' Hunkles" in the crowd as they ducked away. In two minutes the spot was cleared of Its hundreds and the ranks of the

Those who won prizes at the garden roducts show, held in Columbia hall, )k!ahoma. under the auspices of the
Wallace school, assembled yesterday to
have their pictures taken. Ed. Peters
made a group photograph of the winners, which will later be reproduced in a cut and preserved for future use.
The exhibition was about tha most
successful event ever hed in the local
public schools. The exhibits were so numerous and of such splendid quality
that tiiev would have done credit to a
ounty fair, and visitors on all sides
expressed their amazement at the
showing. There was a wagonload of prime vegetables, which were placed on tables along the south hide of the
hall and banked against the wall, while the lowers tastefully arranged across! the west end and in front of the stage were in keeping -with the magnitude of
the vegetable exhibition in numbers
and beauty.
The display of carrots would have been Mttue short of remarkable even in a fertile district, to say nothing of the district in whb h the prevailing soil is regarded as itie short of barren for the raising of anything but weeds. The kohlrabe had second place and there were prize pumpkins, and squashes and some exceedingly creditabU' exhibitions of toniatoes. cabbages, onions and beets. The flower feature of the exhibition ran largely to fall flower 5"icii as asters, phlocks, dahlias, goldenglow, etc., but there were also fine exhibits of pansles. verbenas, etc. Much ingenuity and artistic sense via? displayed in the arrangement of the bouquets and the interest shown in the event by the people of the neighborhood and the children themselves was most gratifying. There was a program of songs by tiie various rooms of the school exhibiting, which was enjoyed by all present, the hall being packed to an extent which filled almost all the available standing room. While lite exhibit was not in any sense connected with the Commercial
club's movement to advance the love of gardening. Superintendent -Canine is
Inclined to give all the credit to thi3 organization, which started the movement by t offer of prizes for the best kept gardens and lawns.

FLACK RESIGNS
city hall men assert that this Is lockf'l up in a safety deposit vault. Whether Moose has made a new confession denying the first one cannot be learned In any event, new confessions or oh: confessions would not have much standing In the courts, lawyers say, as Moose has already discredited himeeli and their only value would be to shed lights on hltsory all ready pretty well known.
Jim Doherty. heretofore assistant chief of the East Chicago fire department, is now first in command. IPs
appointment followed the resignation of Chief Ben Flack, which was accepted yesterday at a special meeting ofthe board of public safety held for the purpose of considering the resignation. Captain Glen witzer will hereafter ai t as assistant chief, having been appointed to the position made vacant
by the elov.-.tion of Mr. Doherty. The members of the board of public safety were non-committal as to the reason of Mr. Flack's resignation, and when an effort was made to get a statement from Mr. Flack, he could not be located. Mrs. Flack was asked regarding the matter and replied, "I don't know anj thing about It." Mr. Doherty has proved his efficiency for the position in his long service with the fire department, formerly as a member of the volunteer service before a city department was organized, and since then as assistant chief, which post he has h:ld from the be
ginning. Captain Swltzer. the new assistant chief, is also regarded as a man who is fully capable of holding his own with any fire his equipment is adequate to deal with, and friends of both men are congratulating them on their advancement in the service. The headquarters of the Are department by the change just put into effect is nominally removed to Indiana Harbor, Chief Doherty residing in that city. Captain SwltJST is an Hast Chicago man and will have chnrge of the
East .Chicago station. Chief Doherty paid his first visit as chief to the East Chicago station this morning.
