It is now believed that Rev. Father Edward Kowleski, rector of one of the
(Polish) Roman Catholic churches at
South Chicago, with two other priests
and a layman, was injuVed In an auto smash-up at Gary, will recover. Grave fears were entertained Thursday night and yesterda that the priest might not
survive the shock and fearful injuries
he received. He still Is a very sick
man, however, and wiU be confined to his bed at the Gary General hospital for
tome time to come.
Rev. Father P. A. Kahellek, rector
of St. Hedwig's church of Gary, another
victim of the auto smash-up, is report
ed to he resting very well at the Mercy
hospital. His Injuries are not serious
as those of his fellow priest.
Rev. Father Czajkowskl, who drove the ill-fated auto, which was the prop
erty of the South Chicago priest, has
not fully recovered from his injuries
but he has been able to return to his
charge at Hawthorne. John Fabish, of
Chicago, a fourth victim, also returned
to his home.

Waterman, The
William Nicholson, who is the inventor of an automobile wheel so contrived to do away with the expensive pneumatic tires, is assembling the different parts at a local machine shop and will soon have a working model to give its first practical test. Mr. Nicholson is very sanguine as to the merits of his Invention and says he already has had large offers for the sale of the contrivance. The working model will be completed within a few days and a thorough test given the wheel before any claims are made for it.

The funeral of Walter Hlxon occurred from the home on East street yesterday afternoon and was attended by a big crowd of friends and relatives of the young man. He was universally liked and the parents and family have the sympathy of the entire community In their sad affliction. The remains were laid to rest in the mausoleum. Mrs. Mortimer Gates of Hammond visited with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Daugherty on South Court street for a few days, returning yesterday.

However, Chief Martin says, that Bailey will be held for several days until the police work up a further case. In any event, the chief stat,ed. he will

MAYOR IS AMUSED AT STORY
Mayor Kno'.ls today viewed with
more or less amusement ine suiry printed in a Gary paper last night to
the effect that the city council next Monday eight intended to start the baR
rolling toward making local railways
elevate their tracks.
According to the mayor's office only cities of tha first and second-class can
order track elevation. Gary is in tne
fourth class, and unless the legislature changes the law in the meantime it cannot advonce to a higher class until 1920. Furthermore, it is stated. the board of works wnd not the city council has the initiative in track elevation matters.
When the city was founded the Gary
& and Western. Lake Shore and Baltimore Sl Ohio saw that in time they
would have to elevate their tracks, so
thev elevated them in 1907. completing
the job in 190S.
